Hey guys,

After some heavy clutch work on some nasty rocks the other day my GQ has developed a gear meshing grind in the gearbox when I change into 5th gear. It's not that bad yet, but I wouldnt mind knowing what it is so I can fix it before it becomes a big problem! Any ideas?

It only happens when Im changing into 5th, once im in 5th it's fine.

Thanks
Dave

How did you find a way around it?

When i took mine out for a good wheel a while back, i devoleped a grinding noise when changing gears between 4 and 5th. It also happens when i back off the accelerator and put the gas back on. At first i thought it was the thrush race bearing as the noise happened with foot on clutch, when changed it was still the same. Could it be the same problem as mentioned above or something else?

i manualy sync up my 1st to second by giving it about 1/2 second to rev down b4 putting it into 2nd gear. or use double clutch to get the rev's right comming back

only sure fire way is to replace the syncro.

If memory serves, the 5th gear is in the extention housing, do i am not sure if you could do 5th gear without taking the whole trany apart, might just be doing the extention housing part. Never done mine but from the Gregories manual i have thats what it looks like.

To check if it is the clutch or the transmition, when putting through the gears, if it feels hard then its the syncro's

Thanks for your quick responses.

It doesnt make a difference wether I back off the revs or even put it in 5th slowly, it still grinds. I'll try double clutching though.

And even though it grinds, It is still reletively easy to get it into gear.

its either the Syncro or the gear itself is about dead.

i would put money on the syncro

try double clutching and see if it slots in, that will give you an idea on the syncro or not, if it does it still, its the gear. if it doesn't its syncro

If you have the boosted master cyl, it could be a vaccuum leak.

5th gear
