Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi all,

I'm trying to replace the passenger side engine mount on my Rodeo. It has the 2.6 litre petrol motor (4ZE1).

Whenever I have replaced engine mounts before (not on this car) all I have done is take the weight of the motor on a jack and remove all the nuts and bolts on the engine mount. Then jack the motor up high enough to get the old mount out and the new mount in. Then bolt the mount to the engine. Then lower the motor back down and bolt the mount to the chassis. Simple.

However on this car I've done all that but when you lower the motor back down with the new mount on it the chassis holes don't line up with the mount holes. The mount holes are higher than the chassis holes. As in it looks like the motor needs to go down and towards the driver side for the holes to line up.

When I compare the two mounts to each other it looks like the old mount has been stretched towards the passenger side which would suggest the motor does in fact need to go down and towards the driver side. With both mounts together they look the same if you imagine the rubber being straight in the old one and not stretched looking.
There is a part number on the rubber bit and it differs slightly between the two mounts however they look the same if you look at them as above.

Assuming the motor does need to be moved down and to the drivers side (moving it to the drivers side will lower it also due to the sloped nature of engine mounts of course) how would I do that?
I tried to loosen the bolts on the drivers side mount but I spent half an hour removing the skin from my hands trying to even reach it without loosening a single bolt.

I'll take some pics and post them up so you can see what I mean.

This shows what I mean by the rubber in the broken mount looks distorted. This rubber should be vertical not bent up like that. The RHS is the upper/higher part of the mount.


You can see here how far apart the holes are (sort of). They miss each other by about 20mm.

try replaceing both mounts the other side might be streched out of shape too.

I have done this on the same motor, and had the same difficulty - on a MU though. To get it to fit together took three of us and a huge steel lever.

It sounds rough but it works. You will want to loosen all the bolts you can, including the other side, to give more play, and then use the bolts to pull everything into its final place.

Thanks guys. You were both right.

The RHS mount is a little out of shape. However since this is for a roadworthy and the RHS mount is almost impossible to get at I only replaced the passenger side mount. Which involved loosening the chassis bolts for the RHS engine mount and the gearbox mount and prying the crap out of the LHS to get the bolt holes to line up.

It feels good to finally have it in. I thought it was going to be an easy job. Especially when it took about 10 mins to get the broken RHS mount out. All I can say is God bless body lifts and Sidchrome tools . It would have been even harder without them.
