Have a 4.2td gu 2000, has 3inch dunp + exhaust,k/n air filter new fuel filters. It just hesitates when accelerating. goes good to about 2000 rpm then holds back then goes good to about 3000 rpm then holds back then goes ok to about 4500rpm. Can anyone tell me a good diesel mechanic up south in Adelaide?

Direct Automotive just off Sherrifs Rd. on the service road near the expressway exit.
They also do LPG fumigation for all diesels too.

Because more revs doesn't necesserily make more power, not past 3300 - 3500rpm, depending on how its set up. Yours might have power all tha way to 5k buts its not a stock motor is it?

no its not a stock motor :p

Up to a useable 3000 to 3500 it should pull smoothly. Check fuel filter can keep up. Change that and air filter .

There's a place in Regency Park (not south of the city I know....) that the inlaws had their GQ 4.2 turbo diesel fixed at about a year ago. They were very happy with the service (full pump rebuild due to it leaking everywhere.) If you want I can get the name.

Could be a fracture in the pump housing as ive got that problem now and in a certain rev (not all the same) it will sortove like chock then power on again.
And hoonz how do you rev it to that ? I thought all deisels have a guverna in the pump or have you removed this?
Governed to about 4400/4600 i think

you won't get a stock engine to rev to 5000 multipul mods

and yes mine is capable of over revving and destroying itself

i agree with hoonz, and to everyone that asks why rev it to 5000.....cause he can!!!
but it sounds like a fuel problem to me, or the waste gate isnt functioning properly. had the same problem with my surf.

Just come in from work, thanks for reply.
I don't drive it up to 4500 rpm, i just tried it the other day to see how it pulled trying to sort out this problem.
I have replaced the fuel filter and the air filter but didnt change a thing.
if it was a petrol i would say it had all the signs of plugs breaking down under load or water shorting out the leads.

You live and drive in Vic and you still don't see any point to revs, sometimes 5000 rpm is the only thing that will get you up those long slippery clay hills............

5000rpm = momentum

mass + velocity = momentum

We used to have one of these at work ,when ever we fuel up with Ampol Diesel it would clog up the little guaze filter on the pump itself.Maybe worth having a look see how this filter is

You could try using a inline helper pump, mine runs a 80 gallon an hour pump to feed to injector pump. Cause the injector pump could not get enough fuel. Also help starting on the side of hills
Just find a low pressure pump say 5-6 psi. Like a Holley Red Pump etc.
Mine was doing to same until I fitted my helper pump.
Cheers Heath

mate my old man had the same year model in a wagon, same engine same problem, took it to every deisel mechanic that was recomaned, and not one could get it going probly, only had 30,000 on it when he sold, took it to well known people to like berima, nissan just scrated there heads, so they were no use, we put it down to being a dud! we both have 05 model gu utes know, that have pulling power from the word go with no hesitation at all. ive heard of this same problem from other people too, i think theres a bad batch from that model.
