Turbo Conversion, Mitsubishi 4M40

I have a 97 challenger with a 4M40 TDI engine. I am wanting to replace the engine, but due to my location I am finding it difficult to find another one. I have however located a 4M40 normally aspirated engine off a Delica. Can anyone confirm to me whether this engine can be used and fitted with the existing TD-04 12T turbo without too many modifications?

i dont know much bout those engines..

but my guess is they may run different pistons and maybe a head for the turbo..

If you can find out whether the blocks are identical internally.. then theres no reason why you cant bolt on the turbo kit to the new engine.

BTW.. whats wrong with the old one???

The new 3.2 DiD uses the same block (and reportedly the same engine mounts.) Can you find one of those?

PS This should be in the Mitsubishi section. ;)

we never got the td challengers here in australia. the differance between the 4m40 in a triton, pajero and a delica is the intercooler system and weather or not it is turbo. a turbo will bolt straight onto a non turbo motor but into a challenger i dont think you could run the intercooler as it is top mount and clearance is mininal with a v6. you will need to change your sump and pick up as the delica has some fucked up looking thing hanging on the bottom of it. the challenger and the triton have the same front chassis section so i cant see you having any drama swapping it.

Thanks for the replies.

To answer your question Daisy about the old engine. A piece of the timing chain sheared off and got into the crank shaft casing and did the damage. I replaced all the bearings but this only lasted about a month. Don't want to spend any more money on the old one, who knows what other damage may have been caused internally.

The old engine of the Challanger is the 2.8(4m40)td with intercooler. My question is whether I could take the turbo and intercooler and fit it to the 4m40 from the delica. I believe the pistons are different. I stand to be corrected but I also believe they run on the same compression ratio. I don't know whether the crank shafts are the same either?

I have read that there are turbo conversion kits available in Aus for the older Triton models. Whether this has been a success I don't know. Maybe some one could fill me in on this. Essentially I would be doing the same except the old intercooler would also be fitted.
