GQ Gearbox size questions

Post by SLOGQ »

Hi Fellas

Can anyone tell me if the 5 speed gearbox fitted to a GQ with a RB30 is the same as a TB42, or is it the smaller alloy case one as ffitted to the 2.8TD?

Also, are the diffs in a RB30 GQ the physical same size as a TB42 GQ?

The reason for the questions is that im looking for a GQ wagon and will be fitting a 5L EFI V8................... but RB30 GQ's are just so cheap to buy at the moment!

Thanks

Steve

TB42 and TD42 gearboxes i beleive are bigger and different to the RB30. the RB30 have a smaller alloy box i think.....

Diff size i think are the same throughout all the series except some utes and they have a large rear diff....

If your just buying to do an engine swap. I would buy either a 2.8turbo or the RB30. I cant remember which has which diff gear. But will either be 4.3 or .4.6. both are good. And the diffs are the same size as any other GQ.
These can be worth a fair bit for genuin ones.

Anr you are correct the 2 small engines do have the smaller gearbox. But the bigger box can be brought from the wreckers for about $1250. Where as brand new diff gears are approx $900 and end.
So thats worth adding to your equations.

I've seen the "proper size" gearbox for less than that. But if you are really just buying one in order to do an engine swap, there might be something to the idea of swapping in a V8 and matching automatic transmission together.

Just an idea.
This is not legal advice.

Thanks for the info fellas........

Turps, i have been thinkin the same thing about diff gears, so far i have found that RB30 GQs have 4.3s and 2.8tds have 4.6s...

I have also been thinkin about an auto, but when u work out the price of a big manual and a rebuilt th700 and adaptor kit for the transfer, the manual just seems like less hassle and a lot cheaper to.

Im not thinkin of a nissan auto, i hate the way they shift ( i hope i dont upset anyone by saying that ).

I would have thought a auto to transfercase adapter would have been heaps easier to setup than using the manul. As theres no clutch to stuff around with.

As for the 5spd being cheaper. I have seen them cheaper. Heaps cheaper being sold by some of the guys on here. But I thought that was a good rough guide as thats the price in the auto trader mags.

they are different gearboxes and youll have a hard time finding an adapter kit to fit the smaller box, you could alwas fuel intect and turbo the rb30

The rd28t has a stronger LSD

From my Gregorys service manual

The rear axle on 2.8 litre models is a h233b unit similar to the one
fitted to the 4.2.

The ratio is 4.625:1

The construction of the limited slip diff centre has changed for the 2.8
with the addition of thrust washers installed on the pinions and more
friction discs and plates

more torque is requied to get this differential centre to slip.
