buying a gq
hi all im in the market for a gq and well after doing a search i havent found any info regarding what im looking at
basically i would like some input in possibly buying a gq lwb
but i need to know if it seems like a good buy like i know no one can see the car but any input would help,
overall its in good condition body and interior very few scratches
its a 1993 gq ti
4.2 efi straight petrol
250000kms
has had a clutch by the previous owner
full electrics as a ti would
velour trim
bullbar
low mount winch
drive lights
cb & uhf
over head console
cargo barrier
rear draws not sure if they are prof made or not
air compressor and tank
dual batteries
rear lock right diff (not sure if thats correct in wat it is)
and different springs
recently new tyres muds on standard ti rims
HR tow bar
its being sold with no rwc and im not sure what to look for on a gq it looks clean but under neath not sure
he is asking 15000 but im not sure if that is high or low or spot on and info would be great

That sounds like a fair bit of money for a petrol one, i just picked up a 4.2 diesel one for 18 with 135k on the clock, after looking around a heap at ones with mods and turbos, lockers(all the things i want), etc all the ones i looked at had non original motors and high k's, i figured it best to get one pretty original and unf%cked with and carry out my own mods properly.
But as far as petrols go i saw a few that looked ok with mods for around the 13 mark or less, definately cheaper and more plentiful than the diesel, i just wanted and was prepared to pay for the diesel one
as i've got a son about 2 months away and would like to get into outback touring stuff more.
For 15k and a petrol 93 mod i'd want a roady and dual fuel

This a post I did elsewhere a month or so ago, It still hold true IMO
I have just finished looking at every GQ patrol LWB for sale in Australia, at least that's what it seemed like. With the help of the internet I researched around 60 of these vehicles on price, condition, model (RX,DX etc) and engine type also other things.
This is what I came up with others may disagree, there is not a GQ LWB (wagon) petrol engined worth more than $10000 on the private market and not one diesel worth more than $13000 (non turbo) as a private sale either.
To be worth more than this they would need to be very low Km for their age and be in spotless condition with a couple of decent aftermarket extras bolted on to just cross the line. Some I looked at were way overpriced, many were still for sale after 2-3 months.
So at least in the capital cities your 10grand will find you a fairly smick late model 94-97 model petrol GQ with 140 to 200 thousand km on it. Or a very nice diesel GQ with a sick engine but all low km.
The petrol including fuel, servicing, parts etc will be the all up cheaper car to own too, it just will not feel like it when you fuel up.
Be very careful buying a good GQ unreg that has been modified in the suspension height by more than a couple of inches. It is very hard ATM to find an engineer that will pass one of these in QLD I have been informed. It might cost you a lot to get it roadworthy. RWC???? You will need to look into that.
Just one more thing aftermarket goodies are not worth very much from a buyers perspective so try and look through them ie $5000 dollars worth of aftermarket goodies or mods could add $1000-$1500 to the value but only if they were in as new condition and they are exactly what you would have fitted. Some would consider they actually depreciate the vehicles value.

I bought my 1 owner 96 GQ RX wagon td4.2, 2 months ago for $11500 (9months rego) with under 200k (just) all in a real VGC with 13K of dealer servicing receipts, never towed, hardly ever off road with a body and drivetrain that reflects it was a shopping trolley and stored undercover.
You can do WAY WAY better than the one you are looking at.

*JUST LUV IT* 96 GQ LWB TD4.2, Cav, Kings, Dobinsons, Motorguard, Enginesaver, 400 pro, Cooper ST's (rolls eyes), fleetguard oil filters, Delo 400 engine oil, Delo ESI gearbox oil and an RTC.
I agree with this. The one described above is probably worth $10k if it's very clean and tidy, but even so I'd be holding out for a dual fuel anyway, personally. Remember that people are NOT having an easy time selling straight petrol 4WDs these days. As a buyer, you could be successful with an offer much lower than the asking price.
As for what to look for, check out Bogged's guide under "buying a gq?" for some tips.
I would say drive it in all six gears, look for smoke or obvious clunks, banks, signs of things being broken. Because they are quite a strong vehicle with a strong drivetrain, GQs tend to have obvious problems, not hidden ones. But that's just my general take on it, and I always think it's wise to budget a bit of a repair bill on a new purchase.

You can definitely afford to take your time looking around. Dual fuel is worth holding out for by the way. Costs about the same to buy a dual fuel as a petrol-only these days but less than half the fuel costs - it really makes a difference even over a few months.mgundle wrote:thanks to all your replies

I picked up my 90 GQ 4.2 diesel DX for $9000 a few years ago and in VGC then spent $100 on cargo barrier, $2200 on second hand genuine nissan turbo kit, 3" exhaust and dump pipe, top mount intercooler, aneroid, and a few hundred on roof rack spotties, etc.
So an intercooled TD42T in good cond. with IPF and Cibie spotties, roof rack, cargo barries, etc for under $1300 I would tell your mate to shit in his hands and clap at $15000 for a petrol patrol.
