80 series clutch

My 80 has developed a bad habit lately,
As a intermitted fault my clutch, when depressed and released the pedal will only raise about 10mm off the floor unless you put your foot under it and lift the pedal yourself. The clutch works like normal again until, for whatever reason it does it again. When the clutch sticks you can drive but if you just press it down again without releasing it you can't change gears.

There is plenty of fluid in the system and I have bleed it twice and got no air out of it either time. The fluid in the system is about 11 months old.

I wonder if the pressure plate is stuffed.
Does it show any signs of slippage? How old would the clutch be?

Not too sure how long it's been in the car. I have had the car for 2 years and never had a problem. The car has 250K on the clock but I know that the t/c had gears put into it about 12 months before I bought it. I don't know if the clutch was changed then or not. The cruiser has done about 80k since then.I have done the fifth gear with revs keeping the foot flat on the brake and the car just stalls. i.e no slippage. I will try to do this when the problem occurs and see if I get any slippage.

I have also been thinking it might be the pressure plate. Was just hoping someelse had a simialar problem and knew what caused it.

80's have a over centre spring powered pedal assist mechanism, when you depress the clutch pedal down it passes a point where the heavy springs pull the pedal down ( when bleeding thats why you need to pull the pedal back up as the spring holds it down ) the energy in the compressed clutch pressure plate in normal operation will push the pedal back stretching the springs ready for the next clutch actuation. Very simple and effective system of power assited clutch and why 80 have a light clutch pedal. I would suspect that you have a bypassing clutch master cylinder and the fluid is leaking past the piston seal and not enough volume to push the pedal back past the point of spring assist. The simplest way to check for this is to cycle the clutch pedal quickly on and off and if it stays down the master cylinder is f****d if it returns each time try depressing the clutch pedal and hole it on the floor for 1 minute if the pedal stays down the master cylinder is bypassing if it returns it must have a problem with something jamming in the bellhousing ie fork/thrust bearing/pressure plate.

I replaced the master clutch cylinder this afternoon and everything is good.

I practically know 80's better than my kids, ive owned one for 6 years have done every type of mod to them when i operated my business then with building my 80ute it was stripped down to every last bolt then put all back together years later so ive a good idea of what goes where and how everthing works.

$165 for a brand new master clutch cylinder.

The only problem I had was the spanker who last f%&ked around with the master cylinder cross threaded the hydraulic pipe nipple so I had to get a new fitting and reflare the pipework.

And the cruiser is heaps better to drive.
