i have made a set from 40x40x4 box section and asked the same question. i have now decided to weld them on, but under advice, use a fish plate to stop any vertical welding to the chassie.

There's a couple of pics of mine in here

75x50mm box section with 43mm (from memory) tube to the chassis, fish plated onto the rails.
If you want some pics of the mounts let me know and i'll post them up.

scroll down and youll see i changed the mounting, ive come down hard on these quite a bit since i made them and apart from less paint they are holding up well, you can jack up off them as well if need be.

Yeah, they are the fittings for them to be airtanks.....haven't got around to plumbing them up at all yet....but I don't see why they would be unsafe?

That would depend on how much air you pumped into them.

So long as you include a water drain on them or a water trap after the outlet but before any tools , air lockers or anything else you run off them, you shoud have no problem using them as air tanks so long as your happy with the welding that has been done.
