Forget the snorkle and run a large diameter pipe into the rear of the truck
and into a large Donaldson aircleaner.
An easy way to start at a 2 or 4 barrel is with a LPG hood for an Impco or similar and run that onto your piping.
The biggest killer of engines offroad is probably heat followed by Dirt. You want the same filtration system as the professionals use.
If you are talking over 5 litres I would be using at least 3" pipe.

a friends turbo diesel (highly modified) made more power with a 4" pipe rather than a 3" pipe, and that is a relativly low revving 4.2 litre
i'd be talking dual 3 or single 4 at least.

remember, it is all about how much air your engine uses. the more capacity, and the more revs, the more air it will need.
