Does $250 to re grease front wheel bearings sound right?

What car and where are you ?

I think it sounds a bit rich but I have just been quoted $450 to change the diff oils, tcase oil and gbox oil.

I was feeling lazy and didn't want to do it myself - no all of a sudden I am motivated.

It's for a gu , resides on the central coast. Last time it was done was at 40k, now on 91k, i have a 5 week trip coming up next week traveling along the coast to adelaide then home the back way. How long do people live it to do?? Do they really need doing every 40k.I don't know if im being paranoid about it or not. I have roadside membership.

I would DIY it but that mightn't be an option for you - it would be a few hours of effort depending on what you have in the way of tools - most of us have rattle guns and trolley jacks with make a job like that pretty quick

Otherwise I would give a few more places a call - bearings can go quickly and by the time you hear them they are ususally welded onto the axle and will cost a lot more to fix.

Being bailed up on the roadside waiting for a tow and a costly out of town repair or long tow wouldn't be too much fun

Yeah do it yourself. I've done my GU, pretty easy if you can spin a spanner, definately not worth $250.

My local mechanic charged me $60 to do same on a GU.
I was feeling lazy and at that price I couldn't refuse.
They do need repacking every 40k,even more often if you drive through water.

considering it takes less than an hour per side, why not do it yourself, so you actually know whats been done, and check the bearings, brakepads and others whlie your at it.??
Its an easy job to do, not many easier than that!
