Removing bolt for better front end articulation..........GQ

does any one do this and find it worth while.ive been told to replace the front bolt that connects the diff to the control arm on the passenger side and replace it with a pin arrangement.so when i go bush i can pull the pin and give the diff more movement.of course id strengthen and brace the plates.................i think one of the fellas on here told me,i just wanted some feed back to see if its worth while.

i've done it ... when u off road it make ur car lean over more on side slopes ... flexes well ... but other then that it flogs ur bushes out really fast

I have been pulling the front bolt out for around 6 or 7 years.
My Mav has 12" stroke front shocks & lifted shock towers to make the most of the available articulation.
The bushings have lasted fine (Nissan rubber) — probably replaced them 3 times in 6-7 years and the old bus has been to Cape York once and the Simpson Desert twice as well as plenty of wheeling.
It can work well as long as you have a decent lift and weld on the 7 degree casor correction plates.

if that was so safe , dont u think nissan would've put the pin in instead of a bolt ??

more flex worth more than your and others safety ???

Ignore the nay sayers and try it. It will body roll heavily on the road but artic better off. There are several trucks over here running 3 bolts, most don't even put it back in for the road but they are not daily drivers

In some ways it can be better than a permament five link:
- Drive on the road as stock with all four bolts in place (or three bolts & one high tensile bolt converted into an easy to remove pin).
- Get to the trail, unbolt the front left and hey presto — heaps of articulation.
Works like having a removable sway bay.
It works for me and gives me around 27" of articulation at the wheels. With all four bolts in place it is lucky to get 12"
Try it if you want but keep it for low speed rock crawling as the extra body roll isnt much fun at speed (like a four link with no sway bar attached).

would it still roll as bad with a sway bar connected? I'm making some disconnects for mine on friday

THe haultech bushes basically have 2 holes in them north and south ie top and bottom. Allowing the bush to 'squash' a little more and therefore get more travel. DO chew out quicker than genuine. BUt it is the price you pay...

I'd imagine that would depend on how solid your sway bar is - the Nissan ones are pretty crap.
In stock form the linkage on the front end acts to limit body roll. I wouldn’t try to run it on the road with a bolt missing - the RTA, Police, engineers etc wouldn’t like it and it only takes a minute to put the bolt back in place. It is just as fast as reconnecting a quick release sway bar.

I have posted many time regarding my dismay at the number people who blindly try to get better flex.

Flex is not everything. A well set up rig with a locker or two withh most certainly get as far as the same rig with a 5 link or similar.

Flex does two thing, keeps stabilty offroad and maintaines better traction. This said an open diff will divert power to the wheel with least traction anf 5 link or not you will fail to get positive drive on that wheel in a crossed up situation. the opposing wheel with tuck up further and give you a little more stability, bit the lower wheel will still have no weight so still no positive drive.

set the vehicle up with comen sence things to maintain good SAFE onroad manners and learn to drive within the limitations of the vehicle as it is set up. I have driven all places that a mate with a gq truggy with 5link front and triangulated 4 link rear with coilovers

Unless you are using this as a pure offroad only rig leave the front geomatry the same with a set of drop boxes or 3rds arms and if you wish a set of slotted bushes. then decent tyres and a locker or 2

the slotted bushes are going to deflect (that is their job) under brakes and give you a pretty decent caster change. probably enough to induce a fair bit of wander. especially on a lifted car where the angle of the panhard/draglink will change enough to physically steer the car. the factory bushes are stiff for a reason.
