Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi Guys,
Issue 90, March 2006 (latest issue) 4wd Monthly magazine- Page 64, there is a pic of a GU plowing through a boghole (no. plate nsw ARB148) with a very neat looking TUBE BULLBAR- does anyone know who makes this one- I like!

Thanx BP- called them and yep- it's one of their bars (no plate actually ARB 14B!)- they're sending me some pics.

PS- Do people reckon that with a tube bar, you risk twisting chassis more than a standard Nissan, TJM, ARB bullbar in a medium to serious impact.

would be interested in seeing any pics you get from them?

Not twisting much, but look at this photo and see how much expensive plastic/panelwork is just itching to get smashed.



I think they probably are seen better for comp trucks where people dont give a shit about panels anyway..

I like the protection to the radiator etc more on this one...

Bogged- didn't you see the plastic Nissan bonnet protector??? Heh heh...... agree on the bonnet, light protection, I would get modded with hoops around lights etc and have it sit 50mm further out from bottom of grill/lights with plate on top- then would be purrrfect! Not a big fan of the FAT bars on GUs- look ok on GQs (great concept for holding a highmount winch- no cutting grills!). Most would say- just get an ARB/Nissan joffa- problem is they push up into corner of guard and make a mess if any of the trucks weight is placed onto that outside corner of the bar- been there done that!

So you mean a normal ARB winch bar ....

Have you seen how far out an ARB winch bar sticks out on a GU? Agreed ARB has roo strike protection but like I said though- not strong enough in corners- just twist up into guard and make a mess! Not to mention- OMG crazy heavy!

What do you think a tube bar would do?

id have to agree the new arb bars are no where near as strong as what the old ones used to be

to be honest, I havent looked at new arb bars, but what has changed on them?

Probably weaker due to modern thinking/ design with crush rates in mind and to suit air-bagged trucks- especially in offset impacts (ie: in the corner).

I am not flaming other manufacturers- just pointing out what I require. Had an early gq with arb steel bar- lower section (not hoops) was VERY strong- thicker steel but also boxed/rolled on bottom unlike modern version- corners could take weight without bending up significantly- now have nissan alloy (yes weeker than equivalent in steel) but also have mate with nissan steel airbag bar and another with arb steel airbag bar- twist up into guard if any weight applied in corner- can virtually lift by hand! These new bars are obviously designed to collapse more easily than previous older gq bar, so as not to greatly impeed on decelleration rates with air-bagged models (ie: tube bar may collapse less readily resulting in shorter period of decelaration, thus setting off airbags- if still connected!- more readily). If you look at the tube design from Macquarie 4x4 (would have to see in flesh to make final assessment) you will notice the triangulated sections extending out to corners which along with thick walled tube make it inherently stronger particularly in an upwards direction!

Thanx for clearing up Sam- can you make bar in manner I described?- Also will it hold weight of car in corners as posted?

The bar on the wagon is mine and was made by Stu (Freedom Automotive Technologies) in Bright. He must be talking about the ute...

No, they are talking about the pic in 4WD monthly, not the ones in this thread.
