Whats wrong with this rear diff ?

Morning all,

Driving home yesterday I was getting a soft whirring noise from the back end. After approx 30km's down the freeway this had turned into quite a noisey clunking sound  It reminds me of when my diff went cactus and it was then handed over to a mechanic to get welded :)

Have a look/listen to this video and see what you think.

Has the weld broken or is it something else? The diff has been leaking a little but I cant get the fill plug out to check if its something as simple as needing oil  CV's feel fine.

I'm no expert but I'd be thinking it's time to strip and inspect ... the diff that is.

it sounds like you need to change the fluid in your energy polarisor (use the left hand inverted type fluid not the northern hemisphere articulated type)

pete, i accidentally put headlight fluid in my diff once, and it worked just as well as any inverted polariser fluid. ive tried the nothern articulated fluid and it made my car smell like a mother-in-law. and it made my diff whine like a mother-in-law. youre right to suggest against it.
karmic, if you cant get any headlight fluid try mashed kittens. make sure its skinless mashed kittens tho.

mine made that noise just before all the teeth stripped off the pinion gear. but it could be side bearings letting go, carrier then wobbles and scrapes the side of the diff housing. may be diff pinion, but you could feel that by wobbling the diff yoke around.. It could be out of oil, but a rebuild is now needed whatever the cause.

I think you might be out of cactus juice. Time for a new diff.

I tried kittens, but I hadnt mashed them .. I assumed the diff would do that for me! Must be why it didnt work.

The diff grinds them .. you needed them mashed
Barn kittens seem to work best .. but for a front diff I cannot higly enough recommend at least 1Kg of sand .... it works wonders with lapping in the gears

especially beach sand... the salt adds extra lubrication!

welp, the mech rekons the pinion teeth are all shot to sh*t so I'm looking for a 2nd hand diff centre. Should have tried the beach sand earlier! :)
