Which Winch We Want ??

Post by V8Patrol »

Striaght to the point....

Where's the best place to buy a winch from and which brand???
Warn, T-max, Premier, Brawn, etc.

Basic needs are
lowmount, 9000lb min, 12 volt system with 24 volt option, new/secondhand.

I run a 9000lb Warn lowmount on da Patrol and am looking for a winch for a mate... any help or experiance with other brands/power rating much appreciated. Must have a suitable winch fitted to his rig b4 the end of the month.

9000 low mount i would not buy anything other than a WARN. Dont buy the new 4.6HP style the motors are crap. I bought the current 4.6HP style and after 5 real hard pulls it cooked the brush holders(crap plastic holders) and turned the brushes sideways and then burnt everything out. I took it to a guy in West End(bris) and he replaced this with an old style motor which was re-wound and is now approx 5HP. This now pulls like no low mount you have ever seen. I have winched longer and harder than i ever did with the 4.6 motor and it hasnt missed a beat.

The other 3 winches you mention i have never heard a good report about.
Most people i have spoken to that run the T-MAX in competition use have replaced most of the parts with WARN gear.

There is comparison of 9000-9500lb. winches in this month's 4x4 Australia mag. I don't usually buy it as I subscribe to 4wd Monthly, but the comparo sucked me in.

Thests were conducted very similarly to 4wd Monthly comparo's and I found it very interesting. Worth a look if you're looking at a winch.

I beleive that they are the same motor so it is possible. But i dont have the contact details for the guy who did mine. I just walked in off the street and paid cash and he did the work. I know where it is and how to get there but i dont know the name of the place or the address. Sorry

I never took any notice of how fast it spooled in before the re-build.
I do know that before it would stall real easy and now it is very hard to stall.
