40 series Diff centre- Front to Rear

Does anyone know if it is possible to take the diff centre (inc. spider gears etc.) out of a front housing and fit it in the rear housing? Is it straightforward or is it a PITA?
Vehicle is a 40 series landcruiser (both diffs are drum brake models).
Cheers.

should not be a problem, although if you had the years of the diffs it'd help. the only snags you could run into are:

if it's an early rear housing, it'll be semi floater, so the front diff won't have the provisions for a C clip to hold the axles in.

if it's an early diff, where the axles slot in might be coarse spline (altho i think it'd have to be from the 1960's for that to be an issue)

the main issue will be whether the pinion flange is the right bolt pattern.

apart from that it's completely straight forward

Should all match up as the front donor diff is off the truck that the rear diff is on. (I put a later disc braked front diff in when I did the SOA). I'll start on it on monday and hope for the best :?

no the cone washers on each of the 6 studs holding your axle in on the full floater rear diff (i assume yours is full floater)

let us know how you go. I was thinking about doing it on my 60 but people keep telling me the front diff and rear diff are cut differently. Was told the front is cut reverse to the rear. One idiot told me it was impossible as I wouldnt be able to steer it on road coz its a LSD!!!!

their full of shit. 80 series and 100 series have different, reverse cut front diffs, but the 60 series is interchangeable... their the same diff...

actually i think i have a 60 series diff running in the rear of my 40 at the moment.
