Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I am having some trouble getting the factory GQ Nissan diff lock to actually stay locked in when required. I went up the Ellis track (near Yarra Junction) on Friday it was a bit damp as they just had a recent rain and as soon as I tried to use the locker in anger she just wouldn't lock in. The dash light showed the pin was engaging but you could actually hearing it slide in and out as the diff turned.
I'm going to put the old limo in tonight and see if there are any obvious signs of trouble and I was hoping someone out there could lead me in the right direction.

Have'nt you got that thing sorted out yet? You do'nt have a purple flamed 100 anymore. You shoulda kept the 100 and you would'nt be having the problems your having with the bushpig! Al.

Sounds like you've got a problem with one of the solenoids.

There's a good fix for the factory vacuum solenoids on here.... a part number is supplied in the thread.

Will make the locker activate much quicker too.

The factory locker takes all its loading on just 2 teeth and if it is slow activating you can damage it by applying power to soon. They round off the corners on the dog clutch and won't stay engaged under load.
You have to look closely as the worn parts are partly shielded.
Nissan NZ wanted over $1000 for parts to repair so we fitted another used one which lasted for a year then the same fault, finally fixed it with an ARB

yep j top said it we welded the teeth up on mates 5 , 6 times then got the shits and bought arb air locker

Careful usage is the key. Mine's 240,000km old. You need to be very vslow with engagement, and even more so with disengagement.

I've pulled the centre out and yeap it's the dog gear thats been chewed out. We had already tried to modify it by strengthening it but looks like it just can't handle the 36" centrepedes.
Where to now?
Budget doesn't allow for an ARB locker

Sell the pedes and buy an ARB
Weld the dogs and run low pressure air instead of vacuum to speed engagement and give a more positive hold in
