Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I'm wondering about the economy of a standard 5.0 holden engine..... i was told in stock form driven properly without too much right foot, 15 litres per 100 is not too much to ask.... how true is it? Compared to say a 4.2 litre carby Pootrol? I currently do about 350 kilometres per week, and using around $100 in fuel, and i don't drive it hard at all..... i knew it would be thirsty, but i wasn't expecting that kind of consumption. Would grease the wheels with the handbrake if i can justify a saving of any kind

sounds like yours is real thirsty

mine uses about that in petrol but I could go 350km for about 40$ on gas

gas would be a cheaper option than a v8 conversion and makes more sense if your engine is still good.

But a BA turbo 6 would be even better

hav u though a bout using a 1uzfe 4.0l out of a toyota for power & fuel economy that the 5.0l and it will be a cheaper conversion to

I think every patrol owner here would love to know how the hell you got 14l/100 driving a petrol carby 4.2. And why you got rid of it.

i would estimate i'm getting about 20 litres per 100..... around 70 kilometres per day, and use about 15 litres of fuel...... maths makes my brain hurt so what i basically want to know is, does the 5.0 litre do better????

put it on gas.

V8 conversion for an improvement in fuel economy - it would take a long time to pay the conversion off with the better economy.

Dunno how it equates when put into a 4WD though my mates 5.7 ute gets 13ltr per hundred without needing to treat it too nicely. Pretty sad really considering my magna gets that out of its pussy little smokey 4cyl engine!

yeah but it wouldn't sound as nice, or have as much power about 3 grand for a gas conversion done properly (from what i'm told) and i'll have to put the tank in the patrol cuz i have a long range tank

thanks craig! you're the only one so far hat has actually answered my question. From conversations i had yesterday, the 5.7 gets better fuel economy than the 5.0 because of better engine management. I'll keep looking around and get some answers.

Different vehicle but a mate of mine has a 5.0L in his '85 Hilux. Much better fuel economy than the standard petrol that came out of it under 'normal' driving conditions and maybe a touch thirstier when giving it some. Mind you, with the increase in power he doesn't have to get up it so much to get it moving along on the 35's.

I am absolutely not trying to talk you out of the engine swap, but I think you'd better not try to convince yourself you're doing it for reasons of economy. The saving on fuel is going to be marginal at best, compared to halving fuel costs with an LPG installation.

Do it, but admit to yourself that you're doing it for the grunt factor, not the cost savings.

I see it as doin an upgrade that not only increases the vehicles power and performance....

If you get better fuel economy as an added bonus i think its a good mod

talkin to mechanics today about it.... and one said he has a friend who put a 5.0 litre out of a VP into a GQ and used less fuel.....using somewhere around 15 litres per 100....... and thats driving normally, not conservatively. That equates to a saving of around $40 per week for me in fuel. He did say that in the right hands, the series1 5.7 will use less fuel..... i'm not doing it soley because of savings....... if i only saved $5 per week, i'd be happy with that even if it used the same amount.... i would have no problem spending that much on fuel for 200+ Kw instead of the neck snapping 125kw i currently have lots more grunt.....would sound good....... and i would be indulging in my mid-life crisis a little more It is after all only money.

I used to have an HX Holden with a 5 litre 4bbl carb. and it was great on economy unless you opened them secondary barrels
EFI 5 litres are even better on the juice but same rule applies with a heavy foot.

Roedao - I have LPG on my GQ and I am using around 20l/100km - but LPG is around the high 50 cents/litre Bit better than only 10l/100km on ULP comparison prices Sure it doesnt have the power of a V8 - but in a GQ you shouldnt be in a hurry My LPG setup was cheap too as I bought it off ebay and had it fitted cheap Either way, LPG will be cheaper to setup than installing a V8, plus rego/insurance will be easier

gas would be a cheaper option for sure....... but..... a V8 sounds far better, and as i said before, heaps more grunt besides, if i went the cheaper option, the wife will get suspicious lol

Just rang a mate with a VT 5ltr(last produced 5ltr) and he is also using 12-12ltrs per hundred kms.

if you allowed a couple more litres per 100 for poking it into a Pootrol...... i would save about 40 bux per week on fuel.

Tony, what about the Nissan "Infinity" V8's....which is the Lexus of Nissan.....probably cheaper and even more effiecient than a 5.0l

$40 per week savings on fuel, so over a year that would be about $2000, ........ The TOTAL conversion cost would maybe about $8000. So you could take you a little time to get your money back.
