40 series gearbox+transfer how are they mounted?
hey guys need gelp my trucks gearbox and transfer sit to low in my eyes you can see the transfer hanging under the rail and where the rear tailshaft is almost dead straight into the rear diff the front is on a huge angle anyone got picks of how they should be mounted?
Have you got pics of yours?
May help people to understand the situation better.
The transfer isnt mounted to the chassis at all, its bolted on to the back of the gearbox.

Pre 1978 gearbox tranfer case just hang of the back of the motor (2f motor has 4 mounts) post 1978 has a gearbox x member that bolts to the chassis (2f motor with 2 engine mounts) and the transfer case does hang down a little below the chassis frame it should have a bash plate there to protect it though

Re: pots
the box mounts at the front are on the bell housing have you checked all the mounts as the way you have discribed there is some thing wrongchevJ40 wrote:i have heaps of pics but i cant post them theyre too big, but shes got a 327 in her and the box has 2 mounts at the very front but the rest of the gear box and transfer hangs down low
you might have broken the front engine mounts

Re: mounts
you have the early tranfer case and blokes on here are always breaking them with 2f's an up grade to a later model (post 1978) 4 speed or 5 speed might be the go but i think you will also have to change the bell housing aswellchevJ40 wrote:the engine mounts are definatly not broken i may have to fabricate an external suport at the back cause ive snapped two transfer cases and am starting to think this is why
post 1978 fj have gearbox x menbers

gearbox mounts
chevj40,
you can also get a cross member that is mounted to the back of the transfer via 6 bolts which i have 2 of at hm. all you then do is weld 2 brackets to the chassis which will accept some type of rubber engine/ gearbox mount which ever fits better and bolt the 2 together.
i will take some pics and post them when i get a chance to show you what i mean, then if your interested i will sell you one.
mark.

g'day guys was able to take a few pic's today of the transfer case mounting bracket and the gearbox rubber that was used with it also.
hopes this helps with the understanding of my earlier post.
not sure as to whom makes them as i removed the 2 i have from wrecks.
but if anyone's interested in getting one i have 2 for sale and would also be able to make some if need be.

how are we all, i have a 76 fj40 with a 350 chev 35" tyres lockers 4.11 diffs and i also have snapped transfer cases in half, asked around and alot of people have said its the chev (too much power). I found a bracket on http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php? ... ver(u.s.a) it stops the t-case from twisting under load and so far thats the only thing that i have found that has fixed the problem. made it my self took no time at all aslong as you can weld. i just coppied this one in the pic.

just to clarify, the MAIN reason they stop damage isn't that they stop the case twisting under load, but because the idler shaft is the only thing holding the front and rear of the T case together... being cast aluminium (and 30 years old) a big load on the hemispherical (spelling) idler gear pushes the gear bacwards through the case. the t case saver strengthens it by adding an additional support to hold the Tcase together.davewalton wrote:how are we all, i have a 76 fj40 with a 350 chev 35" tyres lockers 4.11 diffs and i also have snapped transfer cases in half, asked around and alot of people have said its the chev (too much power).
