My car is making some constant noise under the bonnet

Hard to explain but it sounds like one of the belt pulleys. Its not quite a squeal

I tried a spray of WD40 on all the pulleys to see if it would quieten things down temporarily. But it didnt

How can I identify which pulley is the culprit ? They are all so close its hard to tell.

Could it just be tight belts ? The twin alternator belts are pretty tight.

Any advice / tips given the fairly vague description

try some soap on the belts. never heard of wd40 on belts.

Yeah, didnt mean I WD40'd the belts, I meant I WD40'd the pulleys

try removing one set of belts at a time, not sure on petrols, but id try the belt that runs alt, then aircond, and see whaich one stops the nnoise, then go searching from ther3e,

more than likely its the air-con or alternator, mine does the same

What is it though ? Bearings ? Pulley farked ? Dry ? Belts ?

on the 4.2L they have the idler wheel

sounds to me like the bearing on the idler wheel is farked

runs on the same line as A/C
pull it off knock out bearing and match one up at the bearing joint should do the trick



if it just bel;t slipping grab a can of that belt grip give em a spray every now and then

sometimes the belts get shiny and if the pulleys aren't dead true... they "squeek" belt grip every now and then will help it, or new belts. unless of course it is the idler bearing..... piece of piss to change the bearings.

check your harmonic balancer, its a prick to get onto but mine was pretty loose and was making a wierd chuffing noise for ages till i sorted it.

Its that big wheel/belt pully that sticks out the bottom front centre of the engine, it is mated to the front shaft of the crank.

On my GQ I know mine has one, I know because I can feel it when I reach down into that area virtually unseen but be buggered if I could do anything about it without pulling the radiator, simply not possible to get a socket between the two.

For such a big vehicle there are a lot of tight spots when swinging a spanner.

Check wearing on the edges of the belts. Try turning the belts round. Might be a pulley just otu of aligment. They tend to make a noise on some engines and some belts.

I have a few things to get me started.

Im not sure if it is getting louder or if I am more aware of it now.

I ruled out the Air-con today as the 'main' cause. When I switch it on the air-con belt/pulley/whatever does make noise. But when I switch it off that noise stops, but the constant noise is still there. So although it is noisy, its not the main belt/pulley noise.
