Hey all, just wondering if the fuel injected RB30 found in Commodore Vl's will bolt into a SWB Mav?? I'm not worried about wiring, i'll get a microtech ECU. it's more so the gearbox and engine mounts. I'm also wondering if an engineers cert is required, considering the Carby RB30 came out in early model GQ's. any info would be great. cheers

im not sure about the engine mounts but they are different gearboxes, but i did hear the casalmaine rod shop make an adaptor kit to fit the bigger box. why the conversion? if your going to do it id strongly suggest a turbo.

SWB mav = 4.2 doesnt it? I thought all mavs were 4.2's.

Only justficiation I can see is a blown motor. Probably cheaper and easier to get a 3 litre box than an adaptor kit.

Other thing to consider...... 3 litres had different diff ratios than 4.2's.

All in all I'd recommend an RB30 EFI swap in an RB30 equipped GQ, but not in a TB42 equipped one.

Someone here a little while ago wanted to score a TB42 box for a V8 upgrade of a RB30. Maybe you tow can catch up and swap some bits.

Thanks for that fella's, Im just toying with the idea at the moment, other options are to EFI the 4.2 and turbo it. certainly got the cubes to make it hammer. I was thinking RB30 because of the power you can squeeze from them, just looking for the most cost effective way. i don't want to get rid of the 4.2 box, i imagine the RB30 box would be lighter??!! Like the box behind the 2.8 diesel? Bugger that!!! it's gotta be tuff. Ill keep you posted, i just sold my old hilux so i have some funds to spend on the new MAV.

P.S. yep the RB30 would be turbo'd or even twin. A good mate from work knows all the mechanics at Brad Jones Racing (BOC Supercars), so they will help me out with whatever i decide to do. Its good having friends!!!

point of interest, if youre going to get the whole engine/etc, grab one from the R31 Skyline, and not the dunnydore

something about the radiator sitting lower than the cyl head in the commodore

commodore have the better airbox design though..

RB25 Turbo (twin cam and all) would make a nicer starting point - 185kw stock.

Then throw an RB30 bottom end at that instead....... (or RB25T top and at RB30 - whichever way you view it). You should be looking at about 220kw.

Problem is then you'll be up for big $$$ in new injectors, remapping etc.

With more boost, bigger injectors, better exhaust and better from there on you'll have maybe 260kw to work with.

Remember for a 4wd the torque curve is all important - especially on a slow shifting box like the TB42 one. And you'll have to make sure that your air intake and intercooler are designed with offroad in mind, not street use.

Turboing the 4.2 can also get pretty good results if you've got the knowhow... and it probably helps if you have mates to do something about lightening the crank :D

it would probly be easierto fuel inject and turbo the 4.2, it would be a lot more torquey down low

yeah, i think i wll keep the 4.2, turbo it first then think about EFI.
Ill keep you all posted when funds come in and i start spending more cash on it
