Hi all just interested to know if anyone has done such a swap.

the 14bt would be going into a toyota surf 87 model the 2lt is just to slow but i dont want to go away from diesel.

so the engine i have picked the 14bt i believe has more power and Torque and i think it might fit in where the 2lt was

But the question is will the bell housing from the 2lt bolt up to the 14bt or do i need a landcruiser bellhousing and then will the landcruiser bellhousing bolt up to the surfs gearbox? and what else will i need to do ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Anyway i hope someone can help with this question or maybe someone has or knows someone that has done something like it

Cheers
Brendon

The 14BT has definately got more torque and power. But I think you would need to put a BJ landcruiser gearbox, transfer and bellhousing in. Having said this I admit I dont know that much about hilux running gear.

well that might change my mind.

i dont want to go changing gearboxes ect to much f..stuffing around with diffs to get the right gearing for road speed and off road work.

i wouldn't mind putting in a diesel v6 of some sort but just thinking and looking at the moment.

if anyone has ideas of a nice diesel engine feel free to post well look at all ideas

Have you thought about a 1kz engine?

if you don't want to swap gearbox and don't want to move engine mounts your choices are limited to L series diesels and the 1KZ. probably the best compromise between cost and power is a 3L (2.8 litre) with an aftermarket turbo setup, or a 1KZ-TE if you're keen on wiring and electronics. the 14B-T swap wuld be a nightmare, it just isn't worth considering. it won't bolt to your gearbox and if you use the gearbox and transfer out of a cruiser you'll need to move your fuel tank and probably get an offset diff rear axle, will need to move your engine mounts, get a huge radiator, etc etc etc. it's not impossible but you'd spend over $10,000 to make it happen if you found a cheap motor. A V8 swap would be cheaper and better value.

What is wrong with using the 5L 3 litre engine it is a direct bolt in with possably a turbo fitted

nothing wrong with it at all if you can find one - they were only available for a couple of years and the vast majority of them are still running around in original vehicles. The extra difficulty and cost in sourcing a 5L just isn't worth 200cc. Of course if you come across one at the right price, then go for it.
