Outer Limits 4x4 Board

could anyone help me please. I am undecided about my next tyre choice and could use some advice. I can't choose between cooper sure tracs or Mickey Thompsen MTX. Even some other brand would be open to consideration. Thanks.

What do you mainly do with your rig?

The Cooper ST are chunkier than the MTX and the MTX is designated as 80/20 road/offroad use whereas the Cooper ST is a 60/40 tyre.

When I bought my tyres I was choosing between Goodyear Wrangler M/TR, Cooper ST and BFG M/T.
I ended up going for the MTR as they are a very aggressive tread, although not as chunky as some of the full on muddies I looked at. I am really happy with them so far and would recommend them highly. Also, I couldnt find anyone to say bad things about them!

I thought the Mickey FC-II or even the MTZ would be more comparible to the Cooper ST.. The MTZ looks the goods

If you're driving a lot of gravel roads you want ST-C and not ST because apparently the cooper's compund gets chewed up real bad.


Other than that no views either way.

I had S/Ts in 31x10.5 and thought they were great. After 30k km each tyre had almost 70% left. I changed when I went bigger.

yeh mate the coopers always did well for me, i drive sand, and rock mostly, theyre not a muddie by any means and will not perform to a muddy in the rocks and mud and clay and whatever else, but theyre a decent tyre for sure, good wearing, quiet and strong. I then ran JT2s which were noisy as buggery but ran AWESOME in the rough stuff, but i changed to Nankang Mudstars now, smiliar to a BFG or the old Cooper STT pattern, and for 178.50 ea fitted and balnced for a 33x12.5x15 as if you could complain, and iv found theyre a decent tyre so far depends on your driving really

There is very very limited sizes though in the ST-C..

I heard good reports about the ST.. although a few reports of lugs tearing off and other tread issues.

I always thought you are pretty safe with Coopers though

Coopers seem to bring out strong negative opinions better than any other tyre in the Aus market. Yes, there are people out there with bad experiences, but everytime I've looked I find more good reports than bad - so I'm sticking with Coopers.

Bruce believes they're bad because he wants to believe they're bad. Just like he believes his Nissan is better than any Toyota, because he wants to believe it.

I think Coopers have a very good reputation, so everybody who buys them have very high expectations. Then you get those who flog the cr@p out of them, their expectations are not met, and it all becomes the tyre's fault.

I have coopers on currently, but their old school ones so cannot comment on the new ones. Suffice to say there would have to be a LOT of improvement for me to be happy with the new ones.

There's so many variables in tyre usage though so it's a personal decision based on vehicle, use, loads etc.

You've got the old STTs? I bought when the new STTs were literally new - could have bought the old ones, but got talked into the new ones.

I'm very happy with noise and all-round performance (haven't got enough power to induce oversteer on gravel ) but a little concerned by wear (wearing faster than the S/Ts did) and I haven't tested them in really sloppy conditions - which I prefer to avoid anyway.

Having had S/Ts and MT/Rs I'm not sure the new STTs will be much better in really loose stuff.

What disappoints you about your STTs? Other than noise...

I've had brand new Coopers STT fitted now for about 3,300ks and am very happy so far.

I reckon they're quiet, and am happy with their on-road manners including in the wet (which the old one's were a little lethal).

Only been on dirt/rock/little bit of mud so far, but very impressed there to.

Bingham and I took the GU up to Airlie, and they handled that highway fine, in fact he has fitted them to his GU too now. Both thanks to Ryano at Fourby's at Moorooka.

Still no problems with our STT's on our Pajero. I now dont think that there any noisyer than the MTR's my brother has.

Old STT's.

Torn lugs, majorly loud noise (even compared to other muddies in a carpet free previous car), sidewall bulges, poor wear rates, tread cracks etc etc.

If i was you i would be geeting the mickey thompsons i personaly have both brands 315/75 cooper st's they were my first tyres no good off road kept ripping holes in sidewalls went through 4 tyres before i woke up to the fact that there shit. only run them on the road now personaly i would advise againts buying them . Inow have 325/80 mickey thompson claws they shit all over the coopers in the sidewalls and have had no more trouble since running these off road.

Which MT Claw do you have Radial or Bias? Do you drive with these tyres on the road with a fully packed fourbie?

I'm asking these questions because I'm in the market for a set of claws, the bloke at the shop seems to think Coopers STT's are a tougher tyre then the Radial Claw, but which one do you think would perform better when aired down to 20-22 psi out in the scrub? I need to be able to drive on the black top with them, no trailer job.

Can anyone answer this one?

Which vehicle? I never had trouble running my new STTs at 20psi, but my shorty is relatively light.

For general touring I still wouldn't go past the STT. For more hardcore stuff I'd lean towards something like the Claw.
