Internal or External Roll Cage?

Am considering putting a rollcage into my 87 LWB sierra and want opinions on whether I should go an internal cage or exo cage. It needs to be street legal in QLD but what are the issues with cages in comps etc...does it matter which style of cage? Not really looking at competing at the moment but who knows in the future so want a cage that will comply. I like the look and strength of internals and the fact that I can add side intrusions bars is a plus but like the idea of not having to replace panels after a roll over with an exo. Thanks

i would say go internal. look neater from the outside if you still drive your zook on the road and with an exo there is always going to be contact with the body in a decent rollover.

just my 2 cens though.

if you are serious on an internal give Chris at brewskibilt a call. does really good work and isnt priced to bad. he can build it to what you want for example dash bar. side intrusion bars, harness bar, cross bars and seat mounts.

he also does aluminium roofs for the cages aswell.

this is Chris's number, i think he still has this one...0415 426908.

exo is heaps better ,saves bucket loads of panel damage  there may always be minor panel damage in a heavy roll with an exo but i gaurentee there will be way more panel damage wih an internal cage id go exo if its legal in your state my 2c worth

Thanks guys...keep the opinions coming coz there may be things Im overlooking. Also is there a ruling with comps such as must have at least 4 point internal cage to compete etc...I was told that was the rules with comps at LCMP..it that right?

Seems to me that if you want to compete plan on CCDA style cage, similar rules to CAMS for offroad so that gives options on a few other interesting events in future.

And i'll back a recommendation for Brewskibilt, seen one of his that rolled in a sierra at higher speed, worth it.

What is the ruling for LCMP, i know it's cages since new years, but any specs?

toughtracks has a minimum 4 point for challenge class IIRC..

i at LCMP are compulsory for TIMED events--again IIRC grape vine stuff--

also I'm quite sure with internal cage most of the bar work has to have foam around it for safty...

any part of the internal roll cage that can come into contact with occupants, must be padded

exocages are hard to get engineered.... they sort of arent really legal...

but there are many roofrack designs out there for ladders etc that use bars up from the bullbars and rear bars etc that are classified as a roofrack....

i just built an exo cage for mine purely because its much easier to do and saves the car as well...... i rang up the insurance and told them i had a full caged roofrack with bars coming up from the chassis to the roof and over so i can strap ladders on without mounting bars on my rooof....

they just added it on the list of mods... i carry my insurance and engineers stuff aroudn with me in the patrol when i drive it and ill juust show them the report....

I have an exo on my Zuk for a couple of reasons. It is a hard top ute and I wanted to protect the windscreen surround from damage because basically if that gets dented/wrecked the whole cab pretty much needs to be replaced. Internal space was an issue as I'm 6'4" and need all available space to comfortably fit in the cab. I also use it as a roof rack to carry surfboards. ladders etc

exo in qld can't be welded to the chassis according to some people in the know I've asked :)

If it bolts to the chassis its just a glorified roof rack I believe and doesn't need special approvals :) no sharp or sticky out bits and you'd be ok but I don't know how you'd go for strength :?:
