I need to remove my pinion flanges to drill them to suit my driveshafts
(toy conversion), just after some advice on the best way to R n R them, when re-installing them do i need to set them up, or can i just do em up.
Any help would be appreciated,
Damien

They should be done up to the correct torque setting I believe, as they are the adjustment for the amount of play the pinion has.

Mark.

If the toy diff pinion has a crush spacer, it will need to be set for proper preload. You will need the manuals for the specs and one of those fancy low range torque wrenches with a dial readout. Also check wether the specs are for new or used bearings and wether the carrier is fitted.

or - measure the preload as fitted now, mark the nut to pinion thread relationship and fit back as before.

Also - you are s'posed to use a new pinion nut, I would recomend this as not long ago i had my rear undo itself, major PITA. With a new nut the second option will not work.

or just tighten the fark out of it, I went this option. 300 k's still ok

WTF is R n R ?

I have used this method a few times on salisbury and rover diffs (salisbury have a crush-sleeve, not sure about rover), and it works fine.

On a salisbury you can also replace the crush-sleeve without removing the pinion (don't think you can on a toyota diff), and then retorque to correct specs without setting up the pinion again. It is a good idea to replace the crush sleeve with a solid spacer, if you are pulling things down that far.

R n R = remove and refit

Imhaving heaps of trouble trying to remove my pinion flange nut on my 40 series at the moment. Is there a trick to it or am I going to have to invest in a rattle gun.

Sorry for the hijack.

If the diff is in the car and the car is driveable:

Strong socket and breaker bar, with a tube over the breaker bar so it reaches th ground. Engage low range and drive slowly.
