I thought that Discover Aus was primarily a program for Magellion GPS's??
The communication/language may be causing you some issuues.
Try using OziExplorer as it works with Garmin and I believe is a better program after using both.

You can have problems conecting it with the laptop if you don't have a serial port. I have a serial to USB adapter but it doesn't work too well. I find using the GPS 'mouse's' seem to work the best via USB. They cost less than $100 through EBAY.
OziExplorer seems to be the best program to run. Quite cheap for what you get. We used this in the Navrun series last year and it went very well.
