Picked up my "new" '88 model SWB pajero last night. It's a 2.6 body and interior are in top condition. Looks the goods. The only thing I noticed last night was that it had a nice big flat spot on accel if you nailed it. Otherwise it drive nicely.

Anyway, drove it about 150km home last night, and no problems. Unfortunately, I had to drive to work this morning in peak hour traffic. And well... The all so familiar coolant smell. The guage didn't seem to go to high, though and the engine didn't miss a beat. I wasn't able to pull over anywhere to let it cool either

Anyway, It got to work ok and was making some nice boiling noises. I've let it cool and checked the coolant. Not sure how much is in there now, but can't see it. There's some in the overflow though. No sign of water in the oil, and there's a nice coolant stain down the block, under the inlet manifold. Can't see where it's coming from yet, but i'm hoping it's not the head gasket.

I checked the coolant and oil before I left home this morning and the coolant was very diluted and looked like it needed a good flush. Oil was ok.

I know there's not alot of info here, but if anyone could give me the heads up that would be tops.

I'll be checking the fan clutch, and water pump tonight. I'm hoping the water on the side of then engine is coming from a hose or weltch plug.

Had a good look at lunch time. Put a few litres of coolant in the radiator, and it poured straight out the back of the engine. i can't see anything but my guess is that it's one of the bastard heater hoses behind the engine. At least I hope thats what it is.

There's probably a welsh plug at the back of the head. B!tch to get to...

I had a leak in my Sigma, under the intake manifold, which I thought was a welsh plug under the manifold. Turned out to be the intake manifold gasket.

Good luck,

Scott

One of the metal pipes behind then engine for the heater has rusted out...

I don't feel that it can be good news...

System is being flushed and pressure tested tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes.

Yay, got it back today. Took ages for the parts to come in. Cooling system has been flushed and pressure tested. I think I might take the radiator to get re-cored and replace the top/bottom radiator hoses. I guess the thermostat is probably stuffed as well.

Leaking coolant from the intake manifold?

The intake manifold is heated for cold weather running, by engine coolant. The thermostat is housed in the intake manifold, with a large coolant gallery running from head to manifold, through thermostat then hose to radiator top tank. The gasket was leaking around this gallery.

Cheers,

Scott
