Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Okay i have just replaced my rear diff and took it for a spin all was good until i got out i could smell hot metal went around touching wheels and my RHR was just touchable.

Now i thought diff sitting for awhile rear caliper stick on. so I tested this by jacking up and with the car running trurn the wheels all turns freely no noises. apply brake the stop release brak turns with no issues.

so now i am at a loss to what it may be.

any ideas anyone.

not a dry bearing is it? not enough lub in there? can general crap loads of heat if not lube up right

if this is the case is it as simple as removing disc and squirting some grease in.

Not if u want to do it properly, has to be packed the same as a front bearing, and better of sending it to a diff shop to get done...


But i think your problem will be a sticky calliaper slide, my rhr wheel was untouchable not so long ago and it was'nt till i looked at it at night that i noticed half of my disc was glowing red and it was due to seized caliaper slides...... check them first

Whats the best way as i jacked it up and they seemed fine in spinning and applying the brake the relasing and the brake lets go or is ther a better way.

Sorry for the questions just new to the whole mechanical thing.

When I relaced the rear axle seal I replaced the grease with a grease gun, I have a small hand held one with a point on it, perfect for squeesing grease between the bearings.

well when i did get around to putting my speedy sleaves on i greased up my bearing with the grease gun if the bearing look and feel stuffed id replace em
c.b.s bearing in dandy do rear axle bearings at $119 plus gst a side

I'd guess stuffed wheel bearings, which is pretty easy to check if you jack it up.

Is it a GQ or something else? I have never done rear wheel bearings on the GQ/Mav but I understand they are a pain in the... rear.

On a Sierra once I made the mistake of not tightening the front wheel nuts in sequence. Warped the disc enough to make it almost red hot in normal driving. Backing off the wheelnuts, retightened the proper way and all was good.

Worth a try..........

simple as a lower slider sticking ever now and then when hot.

I did my testing when cold.
