Hey all, just almost finished rebuilding my motor and havin a issue with setting valve clearance (engine still in car), how and what did you use/do to move the crank to TDC, i can't get a socket big enough in onto the crank pulley to move it?

Thanks
Ben

put the fan belt on with good tension on it and spin the fan

if its a viscous style fan put the socket / spanner on the alt nut

When I did it, I fitted a large socket on the crankshaft and tried to spin the 2H engine with a long tension spanner. For the life of me I couldn't get it to turn :x Yes, the glowplugs were out and the gearbox was in neutral. I ended up bumping the starter until the TDC marks were aligned. It was a bitch to get it to line up, but somehow I managed.

Be sure the engine is warm when you set the clearance.

Just done mine. Had to take off the bash plate and put a socket on the powersteering pump. It slipped a bit but I eventually got the marks to line up.

Even if I had a socket big enough for the crankshaft pulley, I wouldn't have been able to get it in between the fan shroud and the block.

That was my problem. Couldnt Get Belt tight enough not to slip either. Ended up using a trick the old fella from next door said, putting the car in 5th and pulling/pushing/towing it till the marks line up - worked a treat.

Yep great trick putting it in gear if it's a manual
with my auto I ended up cutting a section out of the fan shroud and refitting it with a couple of bolts ....so I can do it easily next time...
and went and bought the 46mm socket required for the crankshaft...nice and easy now
P.S. no glow plugs and injectors are difficult to get to on a 12HT and you just can't spin past that 400psi mark by swinging on alternator or power steering bolts
