while stripping my disco wreck i was surprised to see how much rust there was in a 10 year old car. mainly The inner guard (you cant see it with the front guard on) there is a channel running along the outside and it was completely gone in some sections. The drivers side was ok though, and apart from a little bit in the alpine windows, it was the only rust in the car. Gee it was bad though. Anyone else (in aus) seen somthing like this?
Andrew.

Yeah. I've wrecked out 2 early Discos ... both around 92 - 93 and they both had rust in the sills and inner front guards. One was so rusty you just needed to pull the drivers door and it opened .. when the B-pillar moved away from the sills
.. or rather what was left of the sills. The drivers seat had rusted through the floor and was tilting toward the door and the rear chassis mounts had collapsed so you couldn't open the back door over the rear bumper bar.
I think some people get sucked in or trapped by the aluminium bit ... I've had people try and tell me that they are all aluminium (both Rangies and Discos) so some drive them through the salt water on the beach never bother to clean them after driving them and they subsequently quiety rust away. Don't know where they got that idea from .. maybe the salemen told them?
Cheers

A few years ago I had a saleman from SouthSide LR tell me that the 110 Xtreme I was looking at was ALL alloy. I started pointing out some of the many steel bits but he sort of lost interest and wondered off
He was either an idiot or a liar........ most likely both.

That's what I thought. Having worked in the automotove industry (both in manufacturing and car yards) I can easily imagine a salesman telling unsuspecting people that they are all aluminium.
The only problem with Rangies and Discos (and Landrovers Defenders etc) is the fact that that they can look great on the outside whilst the underneath is totally rotten.

Yes, you often hear the uninformed trying to sell rangies and disco's as having no problems with rust due to their all alloy body. Do they suffer more dramtically in QLD ?
