Buying an EFI gq

Ok i ahve decidedto spend a little more and buy 93 or newer GQ with EFI/LPG.

I have found a nice stock 94 that i test drove over the weekend. It has a nice steel bullbar and snorkel but from what i can see this thing has never hit the dirt.

Is there anything specific i should look for or listen to when looking at an EFI/lpg patrol? It is fitted with an impco gas unit by lpgas1. Its very tidy, no scratches and has all the service history with reciepts.

Any help would be great

Jimmy

PS: After seeing what Nissan charge for a service i nearly passed out. The owner showed me the nissan receipts with all the work done. Nothing major replaced besides oil and filters and cooland and some brake pads...$2000!!! The service before that was similar and $1500!!! I'm glad i can do that on my own

Was there a receipt for the head? If not, it's next! You'll see.

Dont forget the clutch it may be close also so add another $1000, how much is the owner asking? IMO over $10000 is probably too much.

The GQ I bought came with thousands of $ more in dealer service reciepts over it's 10 years than what I paid for it. :D

No i dont think the head has been changed. Does every GQ crack their head?? I moved away from Toyotas cause of the head cracking in the 4cyl diesels!!

If the head has not been changed what can i do to prevent head cracking besides keeping the cooling system in good order.

Yes its over $10,000 I have not seen a 94, 95 GQ for under $10,000 with less than 370,000km.

So again what should i be looking out for? If the head has been replaced will it just crack again???

Jimbo, I didn' get a great deal either $11500, 96, 198K td4.2 nil hard work ever, no towing, almost no 4wd use, I grabbed the first one I found after researching that fitted my criteria-price was important and it is not the perfect 10y/o car - some of the trim needs work and has some shoping trolly dints etc, I came across even better deals while I was researching but unable to buy at the time. Really there is not a petrol GQ out there worth more than $10000-$10500 if it has over 150k on the clock.

We may be on a different tack because I can only relate private sale prices and a 370k GQ 2 petrol would be worth 6 to 7 grand tops IMO.

They are a tough truck but 370 is a lot of body flexing a lot of rainy days and a lot of warmup's and cooldown's etc. Just simply a lot of use that you ultimately will not get out of the car.

Dealer prices leave you stuck and in the lurch as soon as it is driven away by at least a 1/3 depreciation.

Check some of the ebay prices for a better base line than what I suspect is dealer pricing?

Thanks for the replies.

I have not been looking at dealers at all only private sales. There is not 1 95 or newer gq with the amount of km i'm looking for (under 200,000) for under $14000 in melb. There are some with heaps of km and average interior and exterior but i'm after something in good nick.

Well i will keep on looking then :(

Fair enough I didn't research melbourne at all, I just had a look at carpoint for your area and I see what you mean.

I live in cairns and I bought in Sydney got mates to do the running around in brisbane also when one seemed Ok.

Anyway consider this one $10999, 167k, the homebush car, not exactly the one you want but it's a start, on paper I would have seriously considered it 3 months ago, transport to Melb through a car yard, and a RACQ check would only increase the price $500 I guess. If it were me I would offer at least $1000 less than asking price and have a firm agreement in place before taking any further steps like NRMA.

PS.This is a good example to stay away from:

Thats a $5000-$6000 dollar GQ if ever I saw one, still it presents as well looked after.

Thanks for your help. That is a fairly good deal compared with anything around here that i have had a look at.

I am only going to buy from somewhere in victoria and have a good check myself as i have been stiffed around quite badly in ragrds to cars adn mechanics but it shows that there are deffinately cheaper options out there.

Thanks again

Yeah it does seem good on paper, I recon you could get it in you driveway for $10500 or $10600.
Those cars in melbourn have lost the plot somewhat or it is just bad timing ATM.
Dont rush you will find a ripper if you take your time.

good luck
