G'day everyone, I did a search on this one & after 40 pages came up with nothing so...
after driving for about an hour in my 92 TD 80 series, I can smell gear oil, usually when I'm loaded but sometimes not, what do you think the problem may be??
thanks in advance

could be the oil starting to boil and the breather is doing its job letting the fumes out

have you checked for oil leaks ?

when was the g box oil last serviced ?

The gearbox is vented through the shifter hole, so there may be heat in the gearbox that causes the fumes to enter the cabin.

check for leaks and all that
then check your gearshift boots
there are three all up
one outer and then two under that 'one for each stick .
thats what my problem was .

Cable tie on the shifter boot works wonders.
Did my last '80 5 yr ago and the old boy has it now still no probs.

Hi there, that is normal for 80 series cruisers to give an oil smell from gearbox, if you check out a web site called www.exploreoz.com there is a post from today with the exact same question. I would'nt worry at all about it. Cheers Steve M
