Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi everybody

I use my stock standard sierra for beach fishing and most of the time it is ok but I find it struggles in the really boggy stuff. Anything but first gear low range and the motor winds down and stalls.

I don't want a performance vehicle, I just want a bit more confidence in the sand. What is the cheapest easiest way? Extractors seem easiest to me but do they really make any difference?

to ease the engine's troubles, perhaps think about some wider tyres, not neccessarily bigger, just wider so its got a larger "footprint".

also - if you dont use the back seats - lose them... drop as much weight as you can and power to weight ratio obviously increases giving more power still...

i got a quote for exhaust n extractors (lukey) and it was $500

Do extractors make a difference? Has anyone tested power output before and after installation of extractors on a sierra?

I am afraid that they will increase power by an un-noticeable amount.

i paid $400 for extractors and 2" custom bent stainless pipe and sports muffler... and once it was all fitted they tuned it for me too.

Granted this was 3 years ago, but still..

i havnt got it yet...

Gettin extractors and exhaust done on mine did make a noticable different, it also gave it a smoother power delivery and sounds better

In theory tuned extractors will deliver more power I used to help (years ago) in a garage who had a V8 race car and we made and tuned extractors and had a dyno and yes after considerable playing around..there was and increase... But if you dont do a dyno test before and after its hearsay which aint worth a cracker.. Some body must have done the test...
The obvious is have you let the tyres down? Or you like me I have 35lbs in the tyres and just go in 4L and hope you dont sink......
My mate had extractors on his when first got it makes a great sound but power he has not jumped up and down agian no dyno no idea..
Lets hope the christovers and badjuju have the specs and results

the way i measured the differnce without dyno..was in top speed...yes irrelvant to what the original question but before exhaust it was flatout pulling 90-100, after extractors n exhaust she'll cruise at 110 easily and flatout round 125

Try Mr Muffler in FTG thats where i got mine from and they will do a better deal if you tell them you will pay cash, But go in and see him and tell him what you want.

Extractors and 2inch exhaust $380 and he through in a chrome tip

i agree - made a massive difference on mine... much more responsive low rpm (interference extractors - 4-2-1 pattern). better fuel economy, and generally smoother ride too (less burps and farts).

reason i got it so cheap is ive been going to the same place for all my repairs and servicing since i got the zuk - so they look after me on labour and parts very well... also - im running the vit engine, not sure if vit extractors are cheaper than sierra? (doubt it but who knows).

i'd recommend going to who ever knows ur car best and asking them for a price... you only have to spend it once anyways =)

also - be carefull with the muffler/exhaust... dont go for some stupid rice sounding cop magnet noise maker... youll regret it when you're ears are buzzing just from a drive down the local shop, and your stereo gets a larger workout too =P

Top speed increase from 100km/h to 125km/h is a pretty big increase in power, thats an increase of 56% in wind resistance.

It would be good if there was a place that would guarantee an increase in performance, verified by witnessed dyno tests.

Has anyone done accurate measurements of fuel economy before and after installation of extractors?

Pongo has a plan that involves a motorbike engine...

my 1lt tintop does 125 on a really good day.

cheapest way i would solve the problem is to get a second set of beach wheels.

As everyones mentioned, a decent exhaust will do it good, plus apparently bolting on a Vitara 1.6 carby gets it a lot more power too (i hate zook carbys)

It prob won't hurt to get a higher flowing air filter too. With extractors you are getting better exhaust flow, why not improve the intake as well

Thats pretty cheap, the best i managed to get quoted is 550.

I guess it depends if you are including a cat converter or not.

I've been quoted around $220 just for the cat, around $240 for the extractors and around $150 for the muffler and bits in between.

extractors do make a big difference, I had stock exhaust , then went to extractors and was impressed, it revved up quicker, went faster, I then sold the exhaust to someone on here, and they gave me their stocker, so I could still start the car and it was so crap it wasn't funny.
it changed the car into a snail!

my top speed is 120 at the moment thats only a 1.3 and a vit ratiator

but the extrators will be good i think .. it'll help with the bottom end a fair bit

my 1.3 with just a 1.5" sport exhaust and no other mods used to go up to 160km/hr on a flat with no wind... scary as though!!

how do you know its 160 if the speedo goes to 140 and is probably out by about 15kmph

cos the photo from the speed camera said so.. lol

my speedo was reading 115 when i was flashed - doing 134km/hr (i was slowing down cos the area is prone to cameras!) the speedo needle was in the position where you'd expect 150 to sit on it if there was one. so i can pretty much guarantee i was doing 160.

That said i DO NOT recommend this to anyone - it was very hard to keep in the lane, as small crosswinds would move you up to 2 metres, and the steering gets extremely light at that speed - so correcting it was, well, interesting... but yeah - we all did dumb things in our first car on our P plates... that was mine =P

215/75r15 Cooper H/T's and 2" springs with 1" shackles... standard 1992 gears.

started accelerating at mirrabooka ave on reid hwy, got to 160 just before it starts going downhill before wanneroo rd turnoff... so took a while, redlined 4th and took 5th right up there and yeah... voila! =)

like i said though - i dont recommend it!!!

wider tyres for sand? what part of ur anus did you pull that bullshit from?
wider tyres in sand will bog the car down even more. all it needs is a set of desert duelers to suit std zook rims. a wider footprint requires more power to push more sand and is a known fact. if you feel so strongly that im wrong then how about you go ask our defence force, and ask them what they use, and why they use thin tyres in sand
the only time a wider tyre will benefit is when your pulling a load such as a boat trailer, but i doubt a zook would even do that

i agree the exhaust, extractors, and so fourth are a great idea so the motor can breath a little better, but if the sand is too boggy then it's simply that. therefore you'd be after a little more mid-range power. at which point id be considering a cam to achieve this. their not too expensive, and quite simple to fix with the right information; otherwise the cost of installation wouldnt be much either.

your style is only outweighed by your charisma mate..
