what patrol?

im looking at getting a GU patrol towards the middle or end of the year and im currently looking at what options i can get.
ive always wanted the 4.2turbo diesel, but if i end up not being able to afford im wondering what other options i have.
i have been reading through lots of posts on all the different engines available, but havnt found much info on diff sizes etc...
like does the 3.0 have running gear than the 4.2td? is it weaker?
i want to run 35s with 3-4inch lift and do some touring. like do the cape etc.... so i want it to be decent off road.
atm i got the paj with 33s and 5.29s with factory rear locker and ive been happy with it so far, but the only thing is its too small to carry enough gear when going places. so its time to upgrade.
any ideas??

hey mate,

Running gear is the same i believe in the 3.0 L i.e. just different ratios they are 4.3 CWP.

diff sizes can very i heard that the auto 3.0L run the small rear diff and the manual has the large rear diff but this can very so i have been told.

Not sure if the gearbox are the same on the 3L and the 4.2 i thought they were but someone else told me differently someone else may wish to confirm this but you can also get transfer case gears for the 3L and 4.2 but i wouldnt bother.

For touring needs you want need anything more than 2 - 3" lift i run a OME 2" and clear my 35's on my 4.2 but i have also done 4.6 gears which i now regret and as soon as i can find some 4.3 centres i'm going to swap.

Hope this is of some value.

Mate if your happy with the Pj save your $$$ and buy a trailer

I'd go the trailer idea too..... even a LWB GU probably would be a tight squeeze for a cape trip unless you have underbody water tank, long range fuel tanks, roofrack etc

yeh got a trailer already.
use it for the bike and boat.
the thing is ive always wanted a gu ever since they came out, and after seing what a mate has done with his 100series its giving me more incentive to get one now.
im gona put roofracks (the cage type one with the wind deflector up front)
water tanks underneath, extra fuel tanks, compressor for lockers etc..
another reason for patrol is that i can have stuff set up in the back for touring and not have to worry about it getting wet.

the 4.2 runs 3.9:1 dont they? if i could get a decent transfer ratio (4:1 or better it would be ok.) i think somewhere i saw a kit for 7:1 or nearabouts.

how well do the 35s fit under with the 2" lift? do they scrub at all??

and it aslo has to be manual. unless i see a auto for a fair bit cheaper than a manual equivelant

Try as hard as you can to get the 4.2, the 3.0 is just too useless until the turbo is working. You'll stress your clutch and your tyres if you're regularly doing anything difficult off-road because crawling uphill at idle pace over obstacles results in stalling, which means you tend to try to keep revs up a bit which in turn means you work the clutch harder and the tyres take chunks out because they're slipping/spinning on sharp bits of rock more instead of gently rolling over them. That's my experience anyway, running 33's - and I have the dchip and 3" mandrel exhaust, it was far worse before I got those. I badly need crawler gears to alleviate this.

There's also the potential hand-grenade issue too, even if they have revised the engine since 2000/2001 to address the earlier issues, which only time will tell.

yeh i really want the 4.2, but if i cant find one at the right price when the time comes i may have to settle for something else.
have also considered getting the 2.8, driving it until it shits itself then either rebuilding and working it, or getting a 4.2 and droping it in.
any ideas on this? has it been done before?
i have thought about petrol versions, but the fuel bill is a bit much :?

Q78 Swampers which are 36's with 2-3inch TJM lift no chopping and no hitting.
