Hi guys havent been on here much but here is my predicament. I have a 97 nk 3.5 v6 lwb which has just sucked a butterfly out of the inlet manifold smashed a few valves which in turn put ahole through the top of the piston so new motor needed. I have three options rebuild old motor , buy reco or buy second hand motor with only 80 ks onit whatare your opinions and has anybody beeen down this track if so i would like to know hoe much it cost.

Yep sorry to hear that.
This butterfly issue was a DOHC design fault (using crappy bronze bushes for the butterfly location).
There's been a lot of chatter on Trail Talk about this issue and a few have had the same problem.
Some guys remove the second butterfly to avoid this happening (at the expense of some power) others have retrofitted their own stronger bushing set ups.
I believe it was rectified for the SOHC NL models and there maybe a factory uprated kit that can be retro-fitted.
A rebuild is going to be $$$ around $4-5K.
A good 2nd hand unit won't be a hell of a lot less the cheapest I've seen was $2.5K but that came with all the accessories (except loom & ECU).
It's entirely up to you.
One way to look at it is at least with a rebuild you know what you've got particularly if you plan to keep the car. If you don't then the cheapest 2nd hand motor you can find can be thrown in and then sell it.
Good luck.

Thanks bitsamissin
I do intend on keeping car as I have spent too much on setting it up to just toss it away now can check out the engine with only 80k on it while it is still in the car and it will come wiyh evrything still on itinlet manifold etc. so i will probably go this way. I will also strip old motor for parts sensors etc. think this is the way to go need to decide by tommorrow as it also tows my trailer for work. will let you all know which way I go.
