dont use the hammer..... dad thought that was the way to do it on my car.. the harmonic ballancer was cast, and when hit, split in half, leaving some of it in there... luckily all we had to do was take out that front seal, and we could get the rest off.
so id sugest using a puller.

You use the hammer to hit the puller bolt. Always works on those bastard tight ones. Dont pussy around, it needs a good wack.

nah mate i'm in Adelaide now, but thanks heaps for the offer.
if i turn the nut on the balancer, won't the rest of the engine just spin instead of undoing the nut?

That's what i meant.....you need/have too in most case's even when you have a pulley remover they don't just come off.

If you buy one - get a decent one....I just boought one on the weekend....Wasn't thinking & bought a SuperCrapaTool for $33 instead of the KingChrome for $98....
Got it home - and it was too small for the balancer I was trying to remove (from AMC360). So thing it was out with the grinder to enlargen the holes to make it fit.
Then the bloody thing just didn't have the guts to pull it off and when lovingly "tapped" witha hammer it broke
Serves me bloody right
