Any ideas on why my transfer case jumps out of low range under engine braking ?

I dunno about 80 series transfers, but in 60/75 series transfers there is a spring loaded detent ball near the hi-lo shifter that should be checked first if the spring has lost its tension. Otherwise it can be worn out splines on the rear transfer output shaft (not the gearbox shaft which is another problem entirely) where it engages the hi-lo shift collar.

Thanks Dave, I will give the detent spring a try and keep my fingers crossed. Come to think of it that is pretty much what I have been doing on steep descents anyway!

Mine was doing it aqfter i changed treansfer cases. It turned out to be just an adjustment to the arm going from the lever to the transfer case. No problems now
