BAD Noises from the engine

Been driving around today and had a metallic grinding noise develope from the engine bay. It started suddenly and does seem to fluctuate with the revs of the engine . First thought was something jammedup in the engine bay but its still happening when stopped . I thought it might be the fan clutch as the noise has been coming and going whilst driving, it stopped as suddenly as it started while driving, only to restart when the car was started again . Not game to stick my head too close to the fan as it does have some age cracks in it.
If anyone,s got any ideas before something lets go and takes something expensive with it, I would appreciate it alot Cheers Glenn
Oh by the way its an 88 Ford Mav 4.2 petrol

Drive belt pulley's?? maybe alternator bearing?
Drop the belts one at a time and see if it goes away?

Looks like I,ve got a stuffed altanator, seems to be some play in it, and when you spin it by hand you can hear all is not happy.
So now the question is, is it bin fodder or is it worth rebuilding? If not does any body know how much for a new one or is there a better alternative to genuine <like more output ,seeings as Ive got to sort it I might as well do it right
Thanks for the pointing me in the right direction guys
