Hi all,
After reading through the bible etc, Ive been toying with the idea of thermo fans for a long time and while surfing ebay I found these at a pretty good price.....I just wonder if they're any good or not? Anyone got any reliable advice as to wether they would be worth trying?

Hey Paul
Why do you want to go Thermo's?
They are no way as good as a proper working mechanical fan.
The thermos can not draw the amount of air that a mechanical
shrouded fan can under full noise.

Hey Dazza, long time no speak! Thats exactly why I was asking the question, wanted to know if it was truly a viable option or not. My clutch fan is knackered, not working at all I don't think (can't hear it anyway), I've got the silicone oil to fix it, just got to pull it off and fix it. Was just curious about thermo fams. Thanks Dazz!

Just fix the clutch fan or get a new one.
Example The GQ with VH45 running twin Au thermos gets hot up
a long step incline.
Replaced with factory fan and shrouded on same incline and same
ambient temperture it has no problems.
The "twin Thermos" are so overated and yes they fit quite well
but they do not have the same "balls" as the mechanical fan.
It is also difficult with thermos to keep a constant temp.
ie: water gets hot on gauge, thermo 1 or 2 come on,water gets cooler
gauge comes down thermos turn off and the cycle repeats.
But yet some people swear buy them.

Beretta, I too thought they were a good idea although the more I read the less I think so now. I was close to fitting one myself just as a matter of coarse because every other car I had fitted with one had a noticable increase in 'pep', made for a nicer car to drive overall.
These are some of the au twin fan problems that changed my mind on the GQ.
With one fan on it will pull air straight through the other fan and not through the rad as they are common within the shroud, can be wired up so both come on at half speed for cruising without aircon then to switch to full speed when the aircon is turned on to beat the problem but it pulls near 60amps from my 70amp alternator -not worth it when all is considered imo.
When the time comes I will probably try a single high cfm aftermarket fan utilising the same genuine shroud and bolted to the genuine holes not through the radiator core. At anything over 70kph in my experience the fan becomes more or less redundent and that is when the alternator would best cope with the 60amp draw useing aircon, it's all a bit backwards.
cheers fnq

Still haven't seen a real 4wd leave the factory with thermos and no mechanical fan.
I ran twin thermos on a chev powered Rangie (AU ones) and wouldn't do it again.
Mechanical fan is the only way to go.

Hey beretta
I was just wondering if you could shed a bit more light on how to fix the mechanical fan with silicon oil.
cheers

Not all can be fixed.
Nissan descided to have a couple of types of viscous coupling.
One you can pull apart and one you can not.
Don't ask me what is from what as I do not know 100%,mabey someone else could shed some light.
Anyway if you have the coupling you can pull apart you can then crack it open and fill with new silicon oil.You can play around with amount and viscocity of oil to give desired result.

normally unless they have been changed, the Diesel hub can be pulled apart,
the petrol one cant be,
also, for future referance,
Diesel and petrol both run different fan blades as the fan mounting between both fan hubs have bolts spaced further apart,
if you have a petrol, you can go to repco, and but the fan hub to suit a diesel, and also the fan blades to match,
i have done this on my GQ SWB Petrol
i have also topped up the slicone fluid on my GQ LWB Diesel,

Sorry to continue the hijack, but seeing as others have mentioned the viscous fan clutch, do they ever get to a point of being beyond repair? Mine (TD42) has leaked all the oil out, and is quite loose (as in heaps amount of movement between radiator and block).
Worth attempting repair, or buy a new one? Ozy1, what did the new diesel one cost?

I'm guessing Bruce is quoting new genuine up above @ $250.
