GQ Patrol Alternator - $968.00 ??

Post by patrol42 »

The alternator in the GQ decided to play up last night, So its off to the mechanics again today, luckily it was booked in for Wednesday (rebuild the Brake Booster), but Eddy at Artarmon Automotive has squeezed it in today and is getting everything done at once for me.

He could not get a reco units so mine will be sent off for repairs.

Out of interest i thought I would see what a new one was worth..and the price is not right...$968.00

Is this right? I cant believe that the stock alternator is worth this much and now has me worried what they could charge for a reco-unit or the repair.

Has anyone had experience or rough ideas what these should be worth?
Has anyone had their alternator rebuilt, what did it cost?

You called Nissan and they told you this is what it costs? then I would say Yes, that price is right.

Search this Nissan section, AWILL4x4 had some great prices on higher output units from Qld for ~$500 if I remember

I replaced mine with an aftermarket one. It was 100amp instead of the pissy factory 50amp for around $450.

Cheers Mick.

Mate is a autosparky , he replaced a GU TD42 alternator under warranty for $1400 from Nissan. I got the old one for a carton - put $40 worth of bearings in, got it checked over and is good as new.

I have worked on my alternator as well GQ TD42 with out vacuum pump. Replaced regulator ~$280 and replaced rectifier ~$260 about 6 months apart. Still using this one the GU one is a spare

I have a GU 4.5 Petrol (TB45). I paid $90 for a near new bosch alternator out of a VS V6 commodore, (from the wreckers) . Its 100 amps and i swapped the pulleys over, and made a very small simple bracket as the top mounting hole doesn't line up. (The series 1 VS commodores have a 90 amp alternator and the series 2 have a 100 amp). I also cut the std nissan electrical plug off and fitted 2 push fit electrical plugs into the bosch's units. Very simple and now i can get a new one for $100.

I doubt it, unless it's a simple commutator turn and re-brush.

You cant get parts for the Hitatchi alternators. If the diode banks are gone, or the the regulator is fried, you are in trouble.

My diode's burn't out, so i chose the Bosch alternator, which is cheap and available in the thousands.

Parts are still available from Nissan for the Hitachi Alternator. Most of the Autolecs that i tried dont carry parts for them. If the diodes go faulty, then you can drill out the moulded in types that the Hitachi uses, and solder in conventional diodes. Unless you've got a later TD42 with the gear driven vacuum pump, then the types of Alternators you can fit as a replacement are severly limited.

Nick

On mine (85A Hitachi) it was the Diode Banks that were shot, and it has been fixed by an Auto Elec. They can get parts for them, but they dont generally stock them.

I got quoted near a grand from Nissan for an alternator for my GQ. Turned out it was just the regulator  $50 or $60 later it was sorted - and that was over a year ago

High prices AND mis-diagnosis :bad-words:

can you get the 90 or 100a units?
from an old thread

http://www.aea.com.au/index.htm
The mob above sells direct replacement Hitachi alt for GQs with vac pump on rear.

alt7055 about $350 70 amp

They also have another Hitachi alt3110 rated at 110amps for about $440, also with a vac pump.

I have heard of these being fitted wherby the mount on engine is ground slightly to allow bottom foot spacing to fit and maybe pulley swapped to correct offset. Ive also heard they bolt straight on to some motors..

Anyone used the 110amp alt 3110 unit?

stock on the 3110 is a problem, they have being coming for 6 months and were due in this month, but the order has not being filled and there is no estimate for stock.

there is another alternator that is off a truck, is a 120A unit with the vac pump and the same 2 pin arrangent, but rrp is $1200.00. I can get them in for $800 so less then stadard nissan but 120 amp. If you are keen I will get one in for you and check it for mounting, and if it doesnt suit I will refund the $$ to you. If it will fit I will send it down stright away

Email or PM for more details

The 3110 sounds very interesting, and if they are worth $440 then it'd be around the right price. For me, at least, $800 on an alternator is just too much.

Is this mob able to notify you if the 3110 ever comes in?

Shame this vacuum pump is always getting in the way of things :(

I hear ya  yeah I can let everyone know if the 3110 ever comes in. the 120amp unit would be nice, but when the 3110 is that much cheaper and def bolts on unless the 3110 never come in again then I am with you all with the $800 price tag, dam thin retails for $1200
