has any one had any experience about the part time conversion from 4wd systems?

There were some pics showing the conversion steps in an earlier thread. Because it was before there were problems with the board, the pics have probably gone.

I'm thinking of doing the conversion to reduce wear of my Longfield cv's - I use the rangie for long trips.

A new design has apparently just been released with larger balls to reduce wear and extend life.

soon as i sell all my bits i will be doin this conversion due to driveline angle probs andv also to reduce wear on front drivetrain

I have the 80 series Longfields. I don't know how the ball size compares to the others and have not heard of this new version.

It is the magnitude of the hertzian contact stress vs allowable, that causes the wear in cv's.

The radii of the contact surfaces determines the magnitude of the Hertzian stress (smaller radii = higher stress). So larger balls will reduce wear.

As the Longfields are still new, I hope it will be some time before I know how well they wear.

Thanks John. The balls on my hilux CVs are about 17.4mm - how big are the 80s ones? (if that isn't too personal a question to be asking about ball size )

The info on the revised hilux CVs came from Keith (rovertracks), and apparently this new version has been supplied to Michele, so I should see them, or some pics soon. Apparently they have been enlarged in the middle of the bell, so that the ball size can be increased without decreasing star size or bell wall thickness.

Edit - here is a pic of the new CVs - you can just see the slight radius to the outer diameter of the bell.


And this thread has pictures of my longfields, which have a bell that is the same diameter all along.

Checking out ball sizes here and there...
As a side note the early LF cv's are a perfect match for Series swivel ball housings. The newer pattern CV is too big to fit throut the stub axle pilot hole and hench the cv needs to be turned down to fit... Sell your older unused CV's to a series guys and come back for another set..

I didn't measure the balls before I installed the cv's.

From memory they were not too different to the stock 105 series cv's.

I took some pics of them alongside rangie cv, but the hard drive that I saved them to has failed.

I do know the balls were much larger than 17.4mm - I would have been in shock if they were that small.
