GQ Petrol drops revs quickly when slowing

Post by Nass »

Hi all,

My GQ petrol 4.2 runs ok with the foot down but when i back off and put the clutch in to slow or change gears the revs drop way down to anywhere between 100 -300 rpm. Once the car comes to a complete stop the revs come up to normal again 800rpm.

I am hoping it is as simple as tuning but i have played with the mixtures and no matter what i try i can't get it right.

Any ideas would be great please.

Thanks in advance.

is it on gas .if so it could be a converter prob ,,on some early conversions if the gas converter was put on with the diaphram facing across the car instead of in line with the direction of travel then under braking the engine would run badly .
just a though

cheers bill

Thanks bill but unfortunately it's on petrol. My thoughts are that it is carby related somehow but working how exactly is the problem.

it does have a tendancy to play up and if it does play up it's off throttle. i'm leaning towards too much fuel as well but i just can't seem to get it right so i thought i would see what others thought. thanks for the thoughts - i'll put some effort into mixtures again to get more air in to th emotor. This is going to sound really stupid but which way do i turn the screew to get less fuel?

Have a look on the passengers side of the carby. There is a rubber grommet. If you pull it out ,you can see a small slot for a tiny flat blade.CARE is needed with this.It controls how fast the revs drop once the clutch is pressed in.I'm not sure which way increaces and decreases the revs BUT dont turn it to far or you have to undo the 3 screws that hold it together.

Does it do the same when the air con is on??
Could be fast idle/ dashpot attached to side of carby

Hi the rubber plug on the left side of the carby is a deceleration anti polution device. You can disable it by turning the small screw under the plug, anti clockwise all the way. If this doesnt work it might be clockwise. You can not stuf it up if you go the wrong way but do not force it.
