Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Last night I started the ute up ( 1985 HJ75 Landcruiser diesel cab chassis) and the brake warning light on the dash did not go out.

I pulled the top of the brake fluid reservoir and jiggled the float up and down. When the float is at the bottom of its stroke, the waring light on the dash gets brighter. This seems to indicate that something else is triggering the light.

Any one have any idea what besides low fluid can trigger this warning light?

The same light is used for the handbrake yeah? It's not out of adjustent/at the end of it's asjustment is it? Or sticking on?

I am not sure if the same light is used for a handbrake warning light.
Certainly the handbrake has a separate light that is lit when it is on.

Anyway, the handbrake seems to be working OK....

Can you disconnect the float switch - see if that makes the light go out?

might also be liked to the brake booster and it not getting enough vacume, think that also causes the light to come on,and that can be caused by low oil level in the motor

I agree with NJ SWB, in fact I'd wager my goat on it.....if I had a goat......which I don't........honest!! Dodgy float switch. If the light goes out when you disconnect it then just leave it off if you are willing to make a point of monitorring the brake fluid level regularly. If you are lazy and insist on letting the light tell you when its getting low (or you are anal about having everything working as it should on your vehicle) then get a new one from Toyota or check out the wreckers.

On my cruiser the same light is used for park brake, brake fluid level, and vacum.

so could be your vacuum system.

The problem seems to be something in the booster vacuum side of things.

I am not sure yet if the vacuum sensor has died, or if there is a lack of vacuum. Maybe the vacuum pump on the back of the alternator is getting a bit lazy?

Have you disconnected the float switch yet to see if the light goes out? If it doesnt then you guys might be right with the vacuum. I've never seen one play up like that before so couldn't advise you.

i guess it would be vacum side of things is the pedal heavy. alt working alright.

Phew, im not going mad! (or missing a light)

There is sometimes a switch under the master cylinder which will "Switch" when there is low master cylinder hydraulic pressure. Just remove the switch and re-install it to reset it. If it "switches" again then you have a dodgy M/Cyl i reckon..

i have the same thing with my nissan fluid get to low and light come on

mine will come oup the dissapear, always when i hit a bump off road, fluid is good

It was the vacuum sensor misbehaving.

Toyota want $90 for a new one, so I just left it unplugged.

I figure my foot will tell me all about lack of vacuum should that ever happen....
