does anyone know how the filter sensor works on a nissan fuel filter on a 4.2 GU td? I put a multi metre on the two wires going to the filter and they seem to both be earths.

was the ignition on? there is a 'float' (i think its a reed switch) of sorts in the bottom of the filter that closes a 12v circuit when there is water in the filter. one of the cables will be +12v (ign on) and the other will have nothing on it.

put multi meter on the two wires red lead to battery + and black lead to wires to sender both wires show 13 volts.

Congratulations! You've just confirmed your first statement that both wires are earths.

This means the sensor (whatever it is) is effectively closed. According to ausoops' post this would indicate water in the filter. Can you move the filter float around and see if the wires give different readings?

moved the float thing down the bottom,no change in the earth state.

Then I'd say the sensor is stuffed. Take your multimeter to a wrecker, and run the same test on their sensors. If you can see something change as you move the float there's a fair chance it's gonna work.
