I have decided it's bout time I got bigger rubber. I currently have 34 inch JT2s for the fun stuff and wanna go bigger. I have asked a few people and have been advised different opinions on the Q78s. Some say they make 1st low better, others say they will rob too much power.
I have driven with no power since parting with the V8 4Runner and have gotten used to it & have absolutely no dramas loosing on road performance as I only use the roads to go bush. I also have a set of BFG muddies for touring and towing so that part of my 4WDing holidays wont be affected.
Now I can simply go and get some 35 X 11 X 16 peded but have a mate in the club looking at parting with his Q78s and are very keen at looking at this option.
Wadda you blokes reckon????

they are bot bad tyre at all mate.
I had them on my GU Shorty, (which you know from challenge 2006) and they worked really well.
In terms of loosing power I dont think you will loose too much, they are much lighter than a 36 pede which is what I run now. Even running 158 at the wheels I noticed the power drop when going from q78 to the 36 pedes.
The Q78 work really well when they are new but start to let you down after a while. I still think the centepede is a better option.

Gone to the Dark Side
Well I have had the chance to "try b4 u buy" the Q78s on offer.
The gaaring is OK on the road ( gotta speeding fine with them )and seems to be Ok off road in low. They touched on the front twice on a gravel road hole, which will be rectified with the extra 1 inch lift that is planned for the front, but when I fully crossed up they didn't seen to fit in the rear guards. The tyre rubbed on the top inside of the rear guard with still about 2 inches before the bump stops. They were at 40PSI with no side wall flex and I suspect with 12PSI they would have moulded around the ground and prolly missed the body. I also think the guard lips will need to be rolled up to avoid the sharp edges fouling on the tyre which is another easy fix. As for the front I think they will be alright but will rub if the front is flexing and turning, but the extra height I gain of clearence will prolly mean I can drive strait thru obsticles .
Anyway I reckon I'm gunna go the Q78s if my mate can get some new ones before winter.

I have done some looking and found that as I have no swaybars i obviously can, and do, use all the travel I have. This causes the rubbing at the rear. I lowered the bumpstop and with the 34inch JT2s and the car as fully twisted as i could get it, there was about the same amount of gap between the bumpstop and axle as there was between top of tyre and top of wheel well. On 2 other 80 doing a similiar thing, 1 had 35inch Pedes, the other had 35inch Muddies, and both of them with sway bars still connected and fully twisted, were not able to get as close to the bumpstop as I was, therefore not having the same rubbing effect.
Anyway i have rolled the guard lips with a rubber mallet and there is no no sharp edges to rip the tyres and it also looks like the my mates new tyres have arrived , so noe the deal can be done an I will have some Q78 for winter!!

Should be easy to do - and don't flex up at 40psi!
100series 305 x 16 mudstars on std 8" rims = bare metal in rear arches from so much flex.
