Trailer Brakes

I am building an offroad camper trailer.

I have priced a set of electric brakes, and I think it was around the $600 mark.

I would like to know if anyone has grafted disc brakes from a car or 4wd onto a trailer?

I know I can get electric or hydraulic brake kits including hubs and everything I need bolt on, but I don't want to spend those kinds of $$$.

Any ideas or help appreciated

$600 is a good price, I wouldn’t try and booty fab brakes. Think about the $$ your spending on the trailer, the $$ of the contents in the trailer, the $$ of the 4x4 towing the trailer and the value of you and your families life, $600 isn’t that much.

Plus even if u brought all the brake bits from wreckers I don’t think u would see much change out of $200. Then u have to buy the hydraulic hitch and then all the steel brake line, then the flex brake line, then the different fittings for the ends of the brake lines so theirs another $200-300. So at very best if u spend every night in the shed u may be able to fab something up over the next week for $300-400??

I think you would find that it is ileagal to use car brake systems modifiyed to work on a trailer. I have seen somone who did that and when they had it inspected were told to replace the axel and put triler brakes on as they are aparantly different. I use electric trailer brakes with in car controler and would deffenatly go that way, especially for safety of road.
