I just got my front wheel bearings done

and yeah there is still this noise when i brake at the rear o fthe car the guy said i should get my rear brakes checked... Does a 87 sierra have rear brakes? I have a feeling its the exhaust cause it just starts after i finished and smacked my exhaust a bit..

can an exhaust make a bad sound when ur braking though? (Its only when i have my foot actually on the brake)

He also said something about the rear springs..

I think every motor vehicle ever made has rear brakes. Take the brake drums off and have a look at the brake shoes. There should be plenty of 'meat' on the steel backing. If not, put new ones on.

If the sound happens when you're braking, then is basically going to be the brakes. And of course they have rear brakes. Every car does as far as I know although they might well be drum brakes and not disc brakes which is why you can't see them.

To see if it is the brakes and not something related to your car decelerating, use the gears to slow down and see if it makes the same noise. What I mean by this is, drive along and 50 or so and then put it into second gear, letting the clutch of slowly and without touching the accelerator. If you hear nothing, then your brakes are pretty much guaranteed to be the culprits.

so what type of back brakes does a sierra have and how do they work?

is it hard to change them? and where are they?

i drove a few times with the handbrake on by accident wouldve this caused it?

Yes they have rear brakes from std if u haven't taken them out for some reason. They are drum brakes and u may want to get a check done as usually they are free at a brake place. can be a pain to play with them.

well now it doesnt i had to brake really heavily and now it makes no noise :| that is probably not a good thing..

i will get them ch ecked out when i get back to bunbury friday night..

is drum brakes at the back usually an expensive job? tell me what i am looking at please..

its not front brakes cause i just had wheel bearings done and the mech there said the front brakes were fine

have a bit of a read.
sounds like you have no idea about how a car works.
when i was a kid i didnt know jack about cars, but i loved em, and i used to read my dads service manuals for his old fords and holdens, and i used to get under there and have a look with the torch, and then i used to pester my dad till he showed me how it worked.
maybe a service/repair manual is just what you need.

There are also courses at Tafe i think that cover basic car maintenance. Might be worth looking into.

my zuk dont have brakes.....

Could have just been slight bit of crud in there and braking hard cleared them out

Ask your self a few questions??

How long have you had the car?
How Many K's have you done in this car? (brakes dont last for ever)
Have you ever had the rear brake shoes or drums replaced or machined?

If you have had the car for a few years or you have done 20000+ks and are not sure weather it is the brakes or not, I would get them looked at cos i do think brakes are important.

I had my whole rear done, new shoes, drums machined and the cylinders replaed on both sides and it only cost my $220. So for new shoes and machined disks i would think some where near the $130mark.

It's just something loose in the rear drums....mine usually does it when i brake in reverse. Ive been told its nothing to worry about just get someone to look at it if it gets worse or when i get the brakes done. Its just parts wearing out

the other thing - being summer, you can get a LOT of dust in there which makes some funky sounds now and then.... the hard braking may have cleared some of it away =)
