Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi,

I have a IISX 93 Feroza running 235" tires, and Im wondering if it is meant to be like this, or if its just my car.

Ill do 115 km/h according to the GPS, and be at 4000rpm on the flat, with not much more to give. Taco and speedo are not adjusted for the larger tires. Going up hills on the freeway, I often have do downshift, and will be going between 80-90 in 4th.

Is this right? Your Feroza like this too? Or can you maintain 110km/h on the freeway (Sydney-Canberra-Wollongong) all the way without downshifting?

You need to specify the full tyre size eg. 235/70R15 or 235/75R15 etc. The 235 just refers to the tread width, the second number gives the sidewall height (eg. 235/70 = 235x.7= 164.5mm ; 235/75 = 235x.75= 176.25mm etc.)

The sidewall height is what affects the gearing and could be causing your problems- although it sounds more like you're down on power to me?

Even fully loaded towing a trailer I rarely need to downshift except for steep inclines at 110km/h. I've had an indicated 145km/h and still accelerating (when overtaking) with it fully loaded in the back, luggage pod on the racks and towing fully loaded trailer! That's with 235/70R15 tyres on a flat section of road.

Yes the Feroza's a slow.... I sit in about 3,800 rpm at 100 KPH. At about 110 it's on about 4000 grand. My tyres are smaller however when going up hills on the highway at those speeds sometimes I have to downshift to fourth to maintain that speeds.

Top speed is listed at 150km/h, but given my experience with the trailer on the back I'd say they'd do a bit better than that.

at 4000 rpm: 120 Km/h
full speed: ~ 150 Km/h

mine's a 93 widetrack, at about 3600rpm, 5th gear, at 100.. when i first got it, it could keep going uphill without downshifting, but now i do.. really new exhaust system and a tune up so badly tyre size? 30 x 9.5 wrangler mtr

Mine has 29inch tyres on board and sits on 4000rpm doing 110km/h but thats probably closer to 120km/h considering the speedo would be out.

Downshifting is required for steep hills but generally if Im coming upto a hill ill just accelerate a bit to get up it without having to go back

Yours sounds like its about on the money, they're not fast, they are 4x4s

Not Very had my old one up to 160km/h with stock wheels

got mine up to 115 mph max one time. 5th gear is more of a cruising gear so if you gotta shift down, then do it and just rev her a bit higher.

Its 235/75R15 tires. Downshifting still drops the speed, there are some hills going between Sydney and Canberra, where I fill flog it towards them, as soon as I hit them, she starts crawling back, when I hit 3800rpm, I downshift to 4th, maintain the speed for a bit longer, but still trickle down.

The difference between 4th and 5th, is only about 500rpm or so, going up or down a gear, thats how much i drop or increase.

Its a widetrack, got a 2" sports exhaust from cat backwards, snorkel (gonna have a look at the precleaner), jap import engin with about 110k on it now.

Just had her serviced. New sparkplugs and filters. Any furhter ideas? Im getting the impression that Im having less powers than others now.

Have tha valve clearances been adjusted lately? What about the ignition timing?

Try losing the snorkel for a trip and see if that makes any difference too.

it sounds about right. depending on the steepness of the hill you'll have to downshift...

just rev it higher in 4th just before you hit the hill and you'll do fine. or if you prefer, drop it to 3rd and rev it up to 5800 and she'll tackle any hill with speed to gain.

climbing uphill at 5800rpm is a good way to heat up.. keep eye on temp while ur at it.. have a range that the highway goes up from withscott up to toowoomba. fairly steep, i always go up in 3rd gear at 80, and yeah it gets hot real fast especailly in summer On the other hand, it's nice to hear it roar once in a while

The first example sounded pretty much like mine, Im starting to think its lacking power now but i dont know how to go about looking into that. It has extractors, but its not built for speed and i dont use it for that.
