Points gap too small?

I have been trying to pinpoint my recent increase in fuel consumption.
I have a TB42 on gas and since the new head im getting about 80kms less per tank of gas.
I have never had much to do with points, didnt even know mine had em till i looked. Anyway when points "wear out" is it the contactor that wears or the plastic cam follower. I noticed my gap was much smaller than 0.55mm. Could this longer duration of points closed be related to my fuel consumption?
I filed the point faces square and reset the gap, see if anything changes

The cam follower wears and changes the gap also metal is transferred from one contact surface to the other resulting in the need to file or replace the points. Contact surface erodes more if the condenser is bad. Best way to check gap is with a dwell meter while the engine is running.

points should be set between 45-55 thou otheers wize it gose to shit

Could be that the fuel has been set to run a bit richer after you had the head done. Better to be richer than lean with gas, it'll burn valves if it's to lean. ..

MatthewK are you sure 45-55thou is very different to the recomended .45-.55mm, you have quoted this figure a couple of time in posts, where did you get it from?

Let us know how you go, I've got the exact same problem, recently had a gas tune which gained me a little more economy but still 80km off what i was getting b4 i did the head. Still has a slight miss electrical, checking leads tomorrow
