Blowby level on L-series diesels.

My brother's looking for a second hand 3L or 5L. It seems all the units we've checked out (all the toyota 4cyl's i've ever experienced infact) have a fairly appreciable amount of blowby (at least when compared to a 250000k 2h with nil blowby).
So what's your blowby like out of the filler cap (or PCV i suppose)? Can you
a) not feel it
b) only just feel it with your hand
c) easily feel it
d) it spits a mist of oil
e) my underbonnet is covered in a spray of oil
I would have thought only barely noticable blowby to be acceptable, but like i've said every 4 cylinder toyota (B and L series alike) i've checked suffers [like c) - d)].
Anyway any input would be appreciated.

I was just checking the blowby on my 3L it's done 260thou kays and when I pull the dipstick out when it's idling there's a fair amount of smoke coming out. Haven't done it with the oil filler cap yet but is it a normal thing for a L series of that age? I'd hate to think i'm already up for a new motor at only 260k. Was looking at a 1HZ with 240k on it and no blowby at all anywhere. I hope it's common for L series...

Mine is about the same as yours yumsy, mine has about 240k on it but the engine was rebuilt at 135k cause the previous owner had well and truely cooked it. Three of the pistons had chuncks fall out between the compression rings when I pulled it apart.

These motors are somewhat kown for the blowby... high n mighty had a court battle after a fully rebuilt 3L + turbo setup and still had blowby... Apparantly if it sounds like a steam train when it idling and you take of the oil filler cap, there is whats considered an appreciable amount of blow by. If you are worried, make yourself up a oil catch can out of stainless exhaust tube, some scourer from coles and a few other fittings which will remove the oil from the intake.
I have taken the breather hose off mine, and when hot you can see misting oil spraying out, but there isnt any real residue forming when the pipe is connected to the intake manifold...
So simply, some blow by is to be expected.... if its too much, fit up an oil catch can to solve the problem

We were more concerned about the condition of the pistons/rings/bores. i.e. the cause of the blowby!
It sounds like a fair amount is to be expected, thanks for the help so far!

Hi i'm dogbreath's bro. The engine i'm looking at is a 5L with 260 000 on the clock. It's out of a crashed truck that looks like it had an easy life. The guy who own's it bought it from fowles. The engine bay is probably the cleanest i've ever seen on a lux and the body's perfect apart from being crashed. Inside the tub's not even scratched, it looks like someone was using at as a car
At the moment i'm thinking this is a pretty risky proposition. But it is a very easy way for me to get my lux running again and with a bit more displacement over the dead 3L
So keep the input coming, this stuff is gold! I've already searched through a bunch of threads on blowby in these engines but the more oppinions the better.

5L with 260,000...
So we are looking at 260,000 in bout 8 years? If its in mint condition apart from the crash, and looks like a city car, then its probably never had a nice long run so the bores would be well glazed. This would contribute to the blow by.
Whilst these k's are highish, the rings/pistons/bores probably shouldnt be all that bad.
If the price is right, id say it would be a decent motor. While its out spend some cash on it, timing belt, injectors, glow plugs, pump, big ends, start out with fresh filters everywhere, good oil, and enjoy it

im not very knoweledgable on this sort of stuff but i have a 5L with 106000km on it and i took the blowby tube off the rocker cover yesterday to see how much blowby mine has and id say that it about c on the above list. it is noticable but no misting oil coming through, no residue in the tube.
