you guys are real helpful so heres my next question
I ve got extended shackes 2" Im after a standard type shocks (front and rear) dont want to spend a million bucks, Ive been told to find shocks from diffrent cars that have the extended travel and compression to suit the new amount of travel etc Has anyone already done this and what types did you use

if your after decent cheap shocks that give good travel the i think the general consensus will be VS commodore wagon rears for the front and hilux shocks for the back.

Gabriel part no. 81318 for rear of leafy Jackeroo, 60 series is perfectly suited for a 2 - inch bumpstop extension with around 9 inches of travel as well. 356 closed 581 open.

I've got the 3 - inch crappy Calmini springs in mine, with 2 inch bumpstop ext. and they fit fine they are only 5 mm longer on compression then the Calmini shocks ( which only lasted a couple months ). I still have the dead Calmini shocks in the front, so cant say about the Commo ones. Have had the Gabriels in for about 4 months now...

So they fit? Yes! Cool looks like i'll have some new shocks after the week end!

Anyone with 2" raised springs tried these shocks? How do they ride, hard soft, etc...anyone know how they compare to OME shocks in ride quality+wheeling ability? Alot of questions yes, but any info would be handy.

I have 2" leaf springs and bought these shocks last week replacing my current pro-comp shocks (these were quite stiff). The gabriels ride sooo much softer, no more sudden jolts. Dropped the tyres to 12 psi offroad and it rides like a dream. The only concerns i have are that the bushes looked pretty weak and being cheap car shocks im wondering how long they'll last with frequent offroad use. But only time will tell.

Overall with the current special at super cheap, i am very happy with the shocks considering they only cost me approx $100 for all 4

Thanks for the info zooker. Did you have to extend bumpstops or anything in this setup? I am looking at new OME Dakar springs and the cheaper shock alternative to keep costs down.

Went to the one near my joint and they only had 3 of them in stock so i couldn't get the fourth free!

But i will certainly be getting them sooner than later!

With my lifted springs the front springs dont quite make the bumpstops so the front gabriels fit on full compression without bottoming out, however incase of extreme cases where the springs will hit the bumpstop i am planning to extend the bumpstops 1-2 inches, i think 1" would be sufficient but i might go 2" to help with clearance for bigger tyres later on.

On the rear i have the shocks inboarded to the centre and there is no way the rear gabriels are going to bottom out either in compression or extension because they are easily long enough for the amount of droop i have.

Edit: I might add that i do need extended brakelines in the front though, these are next on my list.

REARS NO GOOD FOR 2" Shackle lift
Bottom out all time without bump stop adjustment
defeating purpose of longer travel shocks

Shame everyone didnt want these when i worked for holden. We used to bin these when we fitted air shocks for the heavy duty towing kit. I got some for a few people ages ago. Pretty sure Stumped had commo rears in the front of his zook and it rode okay. Rears were from a hi-ace from memory. Bit to stiff on the compression valving, but length was okay.

Ok Fella's,

Bringing up an old thread, but have just purchased some 2" lifted springs and wanting to confirm the best rear shocks to whack in. consensus on the fronts seems to be the commodore wagon rears.

Back options include: Hilux, jackaroo, HiACE.

Which is best and do the lux shocks require mods to the mounts or do they fit straight in? Am I going to have issues (for now) with city driving on the jackaroo shocks bottoming? Am willing to do the bumpstop extension but will be a whille before i have the time.

that s no good for 2" lift bottom out all the time
and doing a bump stop extention defeats the purpose
of wanting more travel
when you find the right shock please let me know
as i bought the jackeroo and they are f####in useless
unfortunatly I dont have the funds to replace them.
Now I cant even go for a 4BY untill I can afford new shocks

Ouch that's bad man, definately won't be going the jackaroo now.

lay80n suggested the HiACE shocks and some others on here have been mentioning the Hilux shockies as a possibility.

I will let you know as Lay80n gave me a source to PM for the HiACE shocks. I guess if the travel of the shocks = zook travel + 2 inch from stationary position then they should work (worst case).

Did I mention that they work well with a 2 inch bumpstop ext. I apologise for any confusion. You could also make custom top mounts for them as zooker has

Supercheap should have the catalogue available in their stores. Easiest thing to do is take your current shocks off, ramp it on something and take your measurements that best suit your vehicle

Minimum length of the 'toyota van' shocks is less than those on the 'pickup' (assuming hilux here)

If bottoming out is the problem, then the Hiace ones would be better if not running extended bumpstops.

Where exactly on the site did you find the info on the shock lengths VR Rodeo? I wouldn't mind comparing the sierra shock travel with those of the Hiace and hilux. Would certainly give an insight into range of extension

So measured the shock travel, 440 full extension, 280 full compression.

I know more supple springs = more flex = more shock travel, but let's assume the max length of all the shocks is ok.

Also assuming lifting 2 inches would allow for a 2 inch longer compressed shock, add 50.8mm to 280mm (zook shock) and you get 330.8 mm MAX compressed length. The HiACE shocks are the only ones that satisfy without reducing overall stock travel, in fact increasing it by 17.8mm

Jackaroo - 356 min length, hence the need for the extension; Lux - 336 min length, oooooh pushing it!!

Anything I'm not accounting for?

Next test is to see if the HiACE shocks fit up I reckon Lay80n might be onto a winner

You have to download the 330 odd page PDF catalogue, which I did a while back...

According to them

81676 ( stock Sierra ) 282mm - 450 mm

Not too sure about assuming you can get 2 inches longer on compression unless you have stiff springs ...

Hmmm, 313-282=31mm. Lift gives 2" plus sag of stock springs over time, conservatively 50mm in lift (hopefully, otherwise there's no point! )

With the Hiace shocks you'd only be talking 10-30mm either way, either longer or shorter. It's a comfortable bet in my books . I've been told by another member that they work fine, no probs except for a possible rub on the brake bracket. Nothing a little polite bending won't fix

Just had a look through the pdf again. Check the top mount on the 81542 shocks as the 81147 ones are eye to eye fitting and are also off the Hiace the pdf doesn't give the dimensions, the catalogue in the supercrap store should though.

According to the Supercheap Catalogue...

81147 ( Hiace, Hilux, and a few others )
312mm closed - 511 open
eye to eye fitting

Sounds like the best option
